All of us here know that Saturday morning cartoons in the 80's and 90's were something spectacular but what about the cartoons that aired on Sunday morning?

To me Sunday morning cartoons were the bizarro version of Saturday morning, maybe it was different in other peoples area but the local stations around here would play cartoons on Sunday morning. Some the traditional churchy stuff like David and Goliath, other stuff that I dont even remember the name to, it was just weird.

It just never felt right waking up early on a Sunday to watch cartoons. Anyone else know what I am talking about?

I only remember Davey and Goliath on Sundays and then maybe cartoon express in the 90's.

Sunday mornings were always like "mini-saturdays" here. One (and only one) local affiliate showed cartoons (I'm 90% certain it was the ABC one). They didn't have any religous crap, but it was second-run kind of stuff. Rocky & bullwinkle, deputy dawg/mighty mouse, the porky pig show (which mostly consisted of 1930s warner bros toons), funny company (an early edutainment toon form the 60s), and I think a few others of similar ilk. A second reason why I considered sunday mornings as mini-saturdays was because the toons were only on for a couple hours, then they switched to live action shows, which included chips, 8 is enough, fire, emergency, and the waltons.

Years later, that channel stopped their sunday morning content, but by that time I had cable & the USA cartoon express. Cartoon express fell somewhere between saturday & the older sunday both in content & duration, only extending till noon (effectively ending at 11 later on, when the just had totally lameass homebrew shows for the last hour) whereas saturday toons ran till 1pm or sometimes even later.

It's funny, a while ago I was thinking about making a thread about this same basic topic.

I wholeheartedly agree. Sunday morning cartoon shows just weren't the same as Saturday morning ones. In fact, I found most of them to be dull and boring. Furthermore, Sundays were usually pretty depressing for me anyway, since I knew that I (obviously) had to go back to school the following day. :(

I liked sunday mornings. The cartoons were fewer & lower quality than saturdays, but I still liked them. Sunday evenings kinda sucked because that was when going back to school the next day started to sink in, but that was often mitigated by sunday night movies (usually disney ones).
...And of course there were the sunday comics. Nothing like spreading a huge page of sunday comics on the floor.

Sunday morning cartoons were the worst to me, making it the worst day of the week. The only cartoons that aired on Sundays that I can remember was Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

Tried to get back into watching them few years ago, but they were so corny.

This song is deeply embedded in my memory & inherantly tied to sunday mornings. I watched the show every sunday, but it only aired on sundays.

Sometimes the stations would just show old Saturday morning cartoons from years past. Like Little Archies and other cancelled Saturday morning cartoons.

Then there was the The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera. Which aired on Sundays where I lived.

KCOP use to show Tom and Jerry on Sundays so I couldn't argue with that.

But before Jem went to weekdays it use to air on Sunday where I lived.

Because they probably never realized that the cartoons were based on video games. You know, video games, the devil incarnate, the things that make all our kids murderers & rapists.

Unlike Saturday, Sunday morning cartoons, at least in the Seattle area, were the result of network affiliates or independent stations need for content at the lowest price possible.

But all that changed in the late 80's, cuz by the 90's I was watching some amazing cartoons on Sunday mornings,

Saban's Around the World in Eighty Dreams

                                    Ulysses 31

and it was Sunday mornings when I first saw Goku, Bulma, Master Roshi, Oolong, Yamcha and Puar in the original
                                    Dragon Balls.

It may not have lasted long but Sunday mornings in the 90's got very interesting as Seattle's two independent stations tried to out-do the other. But you know what happens when TV stations spend more money than the ratings allow.

We never really had any independant stations in our area. We pulled in WUAB from cleveland & it played the role that fox would later fill, and there was channel 10 (I forget the call letters), but that was a weak/distant signal that would only come in once in a while.

I really wished the networks had taken Sunday mornings seriously. So much of what you saw depended on local stations and the money at hand. Some television markets had no Sunady cartoons at all.

KCTS-9, the Seattle PBS station, was staging an awesome lineup of cartoons by 2000, including the "Redwall" series.
