The style of the main site and the graphic at the top here screams out 1970s / 1980s to myself at first look.

But browsing most threads on this section - and I get a majority of subjects on stuff from the 1990s - which was a decade in which I was leaving education and working - not really growing up as an impressionable youth.

The 70's and 80's were my formative years - and speaking to most of those I know from outside here who have left and may drift back in soon - this place used to be a haven of 1970s and 1980s Retroness until an influx of people who only knew the rubbishness of the 1990s (see Shell Suits, Eldorado and dodgy Techopop)

So I'm opening this up for a "Reclaim The Retro" campaign with more stuff on the best decades there have ever been for ANYTHING (this fact was proved by scientists in a lab in Leipzig, Germany in 2002).

STARTING HERE - with the definitive list of why the 1970s and 1980s was better than the 1990s and 2000s (the 2000s can't be retro - we're not yet outside the 10 year Retro Consideration Window - and we're still living in that decade ffs)

(bit of a long post this one - never mind - the fact has been established)

Anyway onto that list:

1970's and 1980's only kthxplz:

Well it seemed the average age was sliding more and more toward the 14 year old area.

Off the top of my head, the 80's were better because there were actually more than 3 record companies on the planet. Thus we had varied music and avenues for music to be heard, rather than being fed a constant stream of Creed/Nickelback/Hinder buttrock clones

      Amen sir

Modern music is 61% dull generic guitar bands, 19% RnB acts that don't actually perform proper RnB, 5% rappers who don't have the lyrical dexterity to craft a piece of meaningful output and have to resort to "gutter language" (Chris Rock does a great piece on this subject on his "Never Scared" DVD) 14% acts who haven't the talent to write their own stuff so they just massacre a classic from the past and put a "dance track" over it (latest one is that Eric Prydz joker who's destroyed Pink Floyd's "The Wall") and 1% genuine superb talent (who don't get the recognition they deserve.

and finally - reality stuff like X-Factor, American Idol, You're a Star, etc. = tv for the moronic masses, tripe, rubbish - producing mediocre one album acts and should be off our screens immediately

        Self-promotion time:

In my article "Don't Call Me A Poser", I listed dozens of reasons why I think the 80s were great. Although I was born in 1982, I find that decade's culture far more entertaining than what I supposed to be liking, considering my age.

i agree wholeheartedly with you, although im a little young to have appreciated the 70s first hand, although i am a child of the 80s through and through. i think that the 80s especially was a great decade for many of the reasons already listed. i dont dislike the fact that the average age on here has gotten younger, i think it's nice that a younger group of people is interested in these things, showing that our generation of pop culture was truly the greatest. however, i think that the unfortuante consequences of this have already been pointed out, but it must be realized that many of the people from our generation live life in the so-called "real world" with full time jobs, or possibly families. the people who have the most time to talk about the past are understandably younger, as they have more free time. sorry for the long post, but to sum it all up, i think that you're rigth, and that often too much focus is given to things that are maybe a little too recent to call "retro"
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Well, the '90s aren't receiving the old school pop culture recognition the '80s are currently getting. I'm proud to be a child of the '90s and I'm thankful I have a site like Retro Junk to relive the memories of my child hood. Sure, I'm a fan of the '80s, but I'm a major fan of the '90s.

Yeah, we 90's kids have memories too, ya know :x

I mean sure, maybe stuff like "Family Guy" and "Sponge Bob" don't really belong here, but 1990-1996 were pretty different from now, so be more welcoming to the 90's. They were just as cool as the 80's, anyways.

90s were much better then 70s or 80s. Look at the second list, half of that got 10 times better in the 90s.

But without the originals - the so called "10 times better" ones wouldn't have come about

                      So that view is invalid

It's the only old school decade I can remember. Sadly, I was only around in the '80s for about a month. :(

I was going to say that, but what I meant to say is that many people have their favorite decade. I simply prefer the '90s. I respect all the other decades. Even the '00s... on very very rare occasions.

While I'm only 13, i think I would much rather have been a teenager in the 80's. For one thing every videogame wasn't the same run around and shoot things style shooter. Games were fun then. movies now suck pretty bad. With a few exceptions(like "Weird Al" Yankovic) music is the worst it's ever been. Even cartoon's are declining. I like older games, cartoons, music, and movies better than today's crap. The 90's had some pretty damn good things(SatAM, Pinky and The Brain, Animaniacs, ect.) but it wasn't long enough ago to put it on the site. When the 2000's are added, they should put up a sign under the link saying Warning:This Decade Sucks Balls. I wasn't there, but the 80's must have rocked. Anythings better than this.

In the forums early days, most of the talk was centered around the 80's, but as AR mentioned, the average age of the forum members slowly keeps getting lower. Now its at the point that most of the "retro"discussion is about subjects that aren't even over a decade old and are hardly retro at all.
