Bare with me it's probably a unique opinion. I find that today's animation is over populated with japanese imports adapted with cheesy US monologues. Even the great animation companies seem like they just aren't putting their hearts into it anymore. Quality disney channel cartoons are replaced with what looks like characters a 7 year old child could draw, aswell as channels like the Cartoon Network. People have to go all out to even see a classic toon from their childhood now a days. Company franchising/monopolizing has made it this way. If I had a child I don't think I'd allow them to view 80% of the dung they classify as childrens cartoons. Yet I sit here and I'm watching just tv commercials like head the dome, Honey Nut Cheerios (the last commercial i saw before typing this thread). I find alot of great animation, great creative illustration involved with what goes into cereal advertisements. If american networks had quality at large like this I think alot more grown adults wouldn't moan at the children's programming found on tv today. I know it's a weird opinion but I just see alot of great effort when food companies use animation to sell a product.

I dunno if any of you really care but I just felt the need to rant a little, because i looked up to channels like Disney and loved Saturday morning cartoons as a kid because of the quality that went into them. I still awe at big budget animated movies like Shrek and wished Id persued my childhood dream.

Sidenote: I wanted to be a cartoonist for the longest time as a child and teenager and the state of animation makes my head fall in disgrace.

-------

so i was just looking through channels and found out Toon Disney is bringing back a few classic cartoons from the late 80s early 90s and im oddly giddy. I almost felt like a kid again. Is that odd at almost 27 years of age?

I know what you mean about those cartoons. There are websites that talks about the creator of Ren and Stimpy and how much turmoil he was put through to make a show that he felt was a quality product. This is a good example of what happens to cartoonists.

The cartoons produced today are completely cookie-cutter factory pressed creations, so they are much cheaper to churn out. Apparently the networks figure, what does it matter, its just kids watching these things.

Now, any interesting animation is so marginalized, you really have to go out of your way to find it. You can say the same thing about movies, music... any art really. Its all a commodity, owned by businessmen and traded just like one would trade shares in some oil company. It'll be neat if creative minds get back to running these large corporations that feed the minds of our youth.

Don't forget the crappy 3d shows, many of which have almost exactly the same characters, like Get Ed and that crappy show about dragon riders. Same little orange-headed girl with freckles, same voice, different name. The guy who plays as the main character in the dragon rider show also plays as characters who look JUST like him in other shows...scary. And then there's the french anime-wannabe shows...it started with crappy, repetitive Code Lyoko, then Totally Spies (not so crappy), Martin Mysteries (retarded), and ATOM (pretty good, for faux anime)...but all the french show outside of Lyoko have the same damn art style. What, do they only have ONE lead animator or something?

I know what you mean. Almost all the cartoons shown on TV are crap. I can tolerate certain shows, like Spongbob or Fairly Oddparents, because at least they have some good jokes in them. As for shows like Martain Mysteries or Totally Spies, I can't stand. Also that one show with the pink and blue ninja rabbits in it. Hate it.

I'm glad that Disney said they were going to put some of the older cartoons back on the air, at least then cartoons won't be that bad anymore.

OMFG Ying Yang Yo is idiotic, I think that whole Jetix block with the exception of Gargoyles is a waste of a time slot. OMG that new show Pucca looks horrible. I mean look at the premise...

I don't even bother watching the cartoons of today, my kids really don't like them anyways. I don't even watch TV these days, I just stick to my DVDs.

you're perfectly right. Networks just stopped trying as soon as the cartoons of the past made them rich. After they became rich, they either kicked the good animators out to make room for the new ones or the good animators just called it quits. Now we got shows that have no heart, nothing really appealing. What we have now are shows that try to have that japanese stylization or shows that just plain suck. Nickelodeon gave up after hey arnold, the disney channel gave up after recess, and cartoon network gave up after the old episodes of dexter's lab. (although, courage the cowardly dog was good.)

You forgot "Oban Star Racers" as well (not that it matters). Often the problem with anime wannabes is that they don't look into the brass tax, or, what made anime work. They just ape the conventions of the style/design, rather than the storytelling elements.

Kim Possible is over, and American Dragon has turned to crap with the new art style and lame new animation.
