(note: i posted this on the toonzone entertainment thread, but it fits here as well)

Dont get me wrong, im no prude, and i do enjoy stuff like Heroes, Studio 60, Scrubs, Lost, My name is earl, 30 rock, the office, smallville, veronica mars, etc, but does anyone think theres a lack of shows that the whole family can watch? I mean, almost all the shows i just mentioned arent exactly "family oriented", while back in the 80s/early 90s we had quality stuff like the cosby show, family ties, different strokes, growing pains, boy meets world, family matters, a different world, etc. Heck, even full house wasnt as bad as people say, and as for action shows we had a-team, airwolf, knight rider, dukes of hazzard, to say nothing of quality dramas like my so called life and st. elsewhere. Now what do we have? George Lopez and According to Jim (king of queens and two and a half men could arguably apply too), and i cant see whole families gathered in front of the tv set watching stuff like heroes, smallville, house, or lost. I mean, i dont want to sacrfice quality, but am i the only one nostalgic for a whole family watching a show together?

I've given up hope on television, really. I had a sad moment of clarity one night while watching ER, which I have watched since it came on air in 1994. It is no longer about "ohh I wonder what disease he has.." and "Name that rash". Now it's about "Gee I wonder who's going to have a fling with who?" It's become all about love triangles and soap opera style drama.

And sitcoms have destroyed any "wholesome" view of the family. Husbands belittling their wifes, and visa versa. Constant cheap shots at each other and kids who are out of control. There's no promotion of any kind of family like you'd see in "The Brady Bunch" "Cosby" and "Full House". In those shows, sure there'd be some crude humor, but there was always support for one another as opposed to "it's all about me". Which I think is the whole core message of shows, both adult and child oriented.

Maybe I AM a prude. I used to LOVE tv. But I see such a stark contrast between 1987 and 2007. It seems that these shows are built on sex, greed, and crudeness. Shows back before like 1992/93 it seems (just to throw out an arbotrary year) had interesting plot lines and it was almost a huge deal if someone had sex...it was saved for the "very special episode". On Full House, when DJ fell asleep on the couch at Steve's...they left it at that. I think if it were current time, they'd have had sex, DJ would get knocked up, have an abortion, and then the show would go on next week like nothing happened.

    Sorry for the tirade.

There's nothing I'm interested in watching nowadays. I just watch my DVDs.

Family oriented shows are dead pretty much. I just buy DVDs of the old sitcoms and such and let my kids watch those instead of the ones on now.

It's hard to pin it on any one reason, but it's just a different era. Reality shows play into also I think. There's way more entertainment options than tv these days too. It seems like tv shows today need some kind of shock factor to keep people interested.

Sometimes I wonder what kids are watching now, but maybe my parents thought the same thing when I was watching the A-Team and stuff like that.

          Quoted for truth.

I dunno. TV in general does nothing but piss me off these days. Personally, I blame the fact that there are too many specialty cable networks now. But that's a rant for another time.

It's sad how TV seems to want to break up families these days. I can just see the kids holed up in their rooms watching Cartoon Network or something, and the parents in the living room watching CSI or House or some stupid-ass "reality" show. Because why the hell would a kid want to watch that crap? And why would the parents want to watch all those horrible cartoons? Grrrrr.

Survivor was fun, the first two seasons or so, but now I see it as nothing more than an oppertunity to parade good looking scantily clad girls across the screen. The people on the show seem to have become very full with themselves. And I say the thing about the scantily clad women, because can you ever see a Survivor: North Pole? (Heh, or "Survivor: Tower/Embarass/International Falls Minnesota")

It seems to be instilling in people that greed is good- lets be as greedy as we can and stomp on people, cut them down and destroy their self worth...but lets make DARN SURE that when our kids play sports that they ALWAYS WIN!! We can't have losers because that destroys their self esteem!

            Dang hypocrites!

i agree, the internet has effected television. The 2 main things that changed tv into the shit it is today.

                    1.) MTV
                    2.) Internet

There are some really, really good shows on these days. There are also some really, really shitty shows on these days. Just like it was back in the early 90's.

I acutally enjoyed some of these "blue-collar" sitcoms.Or at least the fact that Married...With Children is one of my top five tv shows of all time. But yes,i miss the days before all that people thought was funny is sex.Not that sexual humor isn't funny, mind you,but writers need to get out of the gutters.

family oriented? Please, all companies want is money. I remember when every other commercial was a PSA. Now the only ones are the Truth.com commercials... and they aren't nearly as fun as that cheese guy promoting healthy eating.

I think we left the age of family oriented television and entered the realm of shock television. Which is okay with me since I got the family stuff as a kid and now I get to enjoy South Park, Family Guy, Sopranos, jackass, and whatever else the FCC would have banned for life back in the 80's.

Say what you want about south park, family guy, and jackass... but say anything bad about Sopranos and I'll break your friggin' legs! j/k

Family-oriented shows is proaboably dead all-together. I used to like Full-House, Growing Pains and Wonder Years. Now all you have is violence, sex and drugs. I guess there are a few good shows( I like Spongebob) but most of everyhting else is just not stomach-able.

Yes, all the companies care about nowadays is money and nothing more. I stopped watching TV on a regular basis in the 90s when I discovered there's more to life other than watching TV. I learned guitar, starting skateboarding, playing soccer, all kinds of stuff.

I was raised by the TV as a kid and pre-teen. Back then, they usually played each TV show 2 times maximum.

Now they seem to play shows 4-6 times a day (Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon anyone) and that's how I get sick of shows.

Like I said in my other post, rather than wasting my time watching horrible reality TV shows or other garbage now, I just buy DVDs.

We still have American Idol and 7th Heaven. The new family shows, like on ABC, completely suck.

I blame the creation of the "tween" and "young adult" genres. TV is splitting up the family.

That's another thing. Family time is dying. Prime time is now Mommy and Daddy time, so they gear shows towards that age group.
