The post on Mello Yello stirred up a memory I had.

When I was 5th grade and older, a rumor was passed around that there was a chemical in Mountain Dew that would make you infertile (if you were a male). I remember stridently avoiding Mountain Dew for the sake of my future offspring. If I saw anyone drinking Mountain Dew, I felt it my obligation to warn them of the harm they could be doing.

There was never any scientific evidence (that I know of) to back this up; the only explaination I was ever given was that they used very strange chemicals to create that green color. Had I looked at the ingredients, I would have noted that the color was acheived by begnin food dye.

Has anyone else heard of this urban legend?

The rumor wasn't specific to Mountain Dew.

The rumor pertained to Yellow #5, the coloring added to Mountain Dew, Mello Yello, etc. I had actually completely forgotten about all that. I never bought into all that, but at that middle school age, boys can be very paranoid about damaging their dinkle.

I remember a similar thing where I knew guys that would never want to ride bikes because they saw something on tv about how it damages the area.

I remember panicked teenage boys calling in on Loveline and saying they had drank too much Mountain Dew. I think Adam Carolla would always yell at them.

Yeah I remember it. I always thought it was a rather foolish rumor to believe though since there was no real scientific evidence to prove it.

I never believed that rumour. Only heard about the shrinkage rumour but not the infertility one. But I wish pop really did cause infertility, without causing shrinkage, because if it means no babies for me, then that's good.
