I saw this cartoon around 1987 in my Head Start class-- I was four years old. It was the first thing I ever watched that made me cry at the end because I was so touched. (I won't spoil it for those of you who don't know the story.) For that reason, it was one of my favorite cartoons at the time and it's been stuck in the back of my mind for years.

I started thinking about it today, so I looked it up online. I was considering buying the VHS from Amazon, but I got distracted and went on to something else. Then I went to Walgreens to pick up some milk, and I looked at the Easter aisle on a whim. A DVD cover caught my eye and sure enough, it was The Velveteen Rabbit, the same version I saw so many years ago. Since it was only three dollars, I had to buy it.

Anyway, this animated version was released by Family Home Entertainment and features Christopher Plummer (Captain Von Trapp from The Sound of Music) as the narrator. Has anybody else here seen it? (Or perhaps read the book?)

I have seen that...it's been years. I think I might have used to own the book too when I was really young.

Is this the one where the rabbit was thrown away because the kid had it while he was sick, and his parents got rid of anything that might make him sick again? "I want to be REAL!"

This book, the Giving Tree and the Runaway Flying Horse are my favorite childrens books of all time. I gave a copy of the fist two to my friends daughter for her baptism because I think they are fabulous and every kid should have a chance to read them. Her mother and Father didn't know either of the books, which I thought was odd.
The Runaway Flying Horse is a great story, but I don't think it's still in print.
The Velveteen Rabbit has instilled in me a deep beleif that toys are "real" and should be treated with respect. Even now at 26 I still believe this.

Me too. I kinda feel bad if I ignore my toys.
