I could almost believe it, if there had been a huge pop cultural shift. Sure there's been changes, but nothing to completely blow me away. Compare 1997 with 1987, it's a world difference. Am I the only one?
You will lose.

Total agreement with you. It's kind of odd that Tuesday, September 11, 2001 was the day that "changed America forever". There were several days that could have changed America forever. 4/19/1993. 4/19/1995. 4/20/1999. Even 12/7/1941. But anyway, 1997 was different.

As a history teacher I enjoy weirding out my students with the simple fact that they are part of history. 50 to 100 years from now, history students will study about us. How we lived, loved, travelled, communicated, had fun, etc. Our clothes will fall far out of style, our music will become classical, our technology will become archaic, and our view of how the world works will become obsolete.

Their lives will leave behind a legacy, whether it be of great significance to the world or great significance to their families.

It's fun to watch the students look at each other in wonder.

Carefree maybe because you were very young with no responsibility. For me, that time was in the 80's. But I guarantee the world would not agree with me. Just as I do not agree with your assessment of 1997.

            In 1997:

Princess Diana was killed in a car "accident", which shook the world.

Hong Kong reverted back to China for the first time in 156 years of British rule.

Several members of the Heaven's Gate cult committed suicide in California as the Hale-Bop comet passed by.

Timothy McVeigh sentenced to death for the Oklahoma City bombing.

The men responsible for the first WTC bombing were sentenced.

            Mother Theresa died.

The Kosovo-Serbian conflict that would result in the genocide of thousands of innocent people, a conflict that would end up drawing in U.S. troops and NATO as well as UN forces.

While I most definitely agree that 9/11 drastically changed so much, unless you were a child 1997 was not all carefree and innocent.

There was an article in a recent Rolling Stone about how the music industry is in a free-fall in terms of CD sales, and they compared the first few months of the new year with sales from a decade ago. It's amazing that I'm now at the age where ten years ago is something I can remember. Back in '97 No Doubt was topping the charts with Tragic Kingdom and I was in 7th grade. And now, many of the artists I listened to a decade ago are now on VH-1 Classic.

Just imagine how it'll feel when 2010 rolls around. Y2K will officially be ten years behind us! Yowza.

A lot of crap gets pulled every year.

                        1993: Waco Siege

                        1995: Okla. City bombing

                        1996: JonBenet Ramsey murdered

                        1997: What you said

                        1999: Columbine

                        2001: 9/11

                        2007: Va. Tech

So, no year can really be carefree unless you were young.

12/7/1941 did change America. If you look back, we were neutral about WWII until Pearl Harbor was bombed. Think about it? It shook the 1941 America as 9/11 did for us in 2001.

That was sort of my point, the subject was focused on 1997 which is why I gave that specific year.

Yeah, it's pretty different... 9/11 and all of this war crap still hadn't happened... SOME decent kids' cartoons were still on the air... we were all running Windows 95... I was in preschool at this time (but that doesn't really count)--

Yeah, 1997 is still pretty good compared to nowadays, maybe it was the first year with a slightly more "2000's" feel compared to the years before, but it was still a great year compared to say, any year in the 2000's...
