I don't know the name of it but I remember it being about some kids who travel in weird looking space ship to some place where they meet some odd aliens. I was an old Nick Movie that always could be seen whenever Nick would play those commercials that contained a few seconds of footage from different Nick shows and movies.

I remember it was from Nick. During the commercials, the background music was very classy and 1970ish

It was a made-for-TV movie. It was a land-based Space Cases, i think...and the big guy ended up dying to save everyone else..

Sounds like it's "The Explorers" where they build a spaceship and fly and meet weird purple aliens. Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix were in it.
