The first CGI film was Toy Story, a great film. When CGI first came in on the spot, what did you feel?

For me, it was exciting but I really just took as a regular change in movies. The transition was cool and smooth.

When I saw Toy Story, I thought it was some kind of puppet show lol.

I was amazed and still am. A lot of people here shun CGI but i enjoy it. I also enjoy great 2D animation. But, I only enjoy CGI if it is a good movie. Disney/Pixar have produced great CGI movies not just in terms of quality computer animation but films that the whole family enjoys as far as plot, humor and an overall solid story. Dreamworks movies are hit and miss. The Shrek movies have great animation and a pop-culture based humor that keeps older viewers entertained. I have nothing bad to say about CGI but the awe of the animation is wearing off and it comes back to a good story and great characters to carry a CGI movie not just the CGI itself.

It was brilliant but I miss the stunt guys it just looks more realistic when you know its done by a real person than CGI. You can tell straight away when close up if its CGI.
If they replace stunt guys all the time with CGI than the action is too over the top unless its completely impossible to do.

CGI for cartoons and maybe mild special effects is totally okay; but when you pull what George Lucas did and use CGI in place of props and animatronics; it really removes some of the organic, realistic feel... it's just not as effective in my opinion.

The first time I saw it was on the tv show Reboot and thought it was interesting but I still prefered (and to this day still prefer) hand drawn 2-D animation.

I do like the shows Home Movies and South Park which are/ were largely done with computers and I did enjoy the movie Monsters INC.

I was like "WHOA! Those toys! Are walking and talking!! How'd they do that?!?!"

CGI is good when done properly, like with what the brillant minds behind Pixar do. If it's used to fake half the effects of a live action movie, then...bleh.

And if CGI is mixed in with live-action (i.e. Scooby Doo, Alvin&TheMunks, etc.), then it can only spell disaster...

Agreed. The worst thing like that I saw was the battle scene in the final Matrix movie. I was sitting there thinking "This isn't even like a movie anymore this is fucking boring, like sitting around watching someone else playing a video game."

I disagree, especially with the Lucas reference. I could get into a whole episode right here, but I'll spare you. CGI was and is a great tool when used effectively. (I.E. thousands of stormtroopers marching into troop carriers or fighting 1/2 a mile below you) When a film company knows how to use it, it is truly a sight to behold (props to Pixar!) CGI is something that lets filmmakers tell a story without being bound by the laws of reality and it looks way more realistic than a cartoon or claymation (which was about the only thing I could relate it to at the time)

Believe it or not, there was actually a point in time where I could not tell the difference between CGI and claymation-- I thought it was all made of clay! 0_o

Well I loved Toy Story when it came out, but being a little kid I didn't really know how I felt but just fell in love with the characters. But it was defiently fresh, new and different. :)

But now with so many of these CGI movies out, I really miss not seeing 2D animation as often as before in theaters. There are a few CGI films now that I liked, like Flushed Away and Shrek, but I'd love to see more 2D stuff as well especially from Disney.

Ill be honest its okay, but i rather watch 2d instead. Is it true that CGI cartoons take a looong time to make?

Actually, I'd say it's the other way around. Traditionally animated films always took a long time when you're using pencil and paper, but when everything's created by computers it just gets so easier for them. (Have you seen how quickly they come out now?) But we can't say it was that easy for Toy Story, since it was the very first one and Pixar probably had to figure a lot of things out to make it.

Well I'd say everyone that makes CGI films wants to put all their hard work in them, but now the ones that come out are usually not without weaknesses. Except for Pixar, who have always had great strengh in good storytelling. :)

But no CGI film could really take as long as traditionally animated films do.

I agree 100 percent. To me Jurassic Park set the standard for how CGI should be incorporated into live action movies. Most movies really don't use CGI affectively. The only recent movies that I can think of that really used it well (not counting fully animated ones) were "The Host" and "Transformers". I think alot of movies (especially monster movies) would be well served to incorporate more animatronics and less CGI. Remember how cool and scary Alien was.

I think one of the reasons why the new Power Rangers isn't as good as the old ones because Disney added too much CGI

but still, CGI is a great invention
