On December 8th, 1980 the first announcement, that I know of, on John Lennon's death was Howard Cosell on ABC's "Monday Night Football". Cosell was handed a news bulletin while the football game was in progress. His first instinct was to withhold the news until the game was finished but his co-host Frank Gifford told him "this news must not wait, you have to tell them Howard".
Howard Cosell had the difficult task of telling viewers of Lennon's death while the New England Patriots were attempting a field goal against the Miami Dolphins. Later in the game, Cosell made the announcement of Lennon's death a second time for viewers that missed his first announcement.

Definitely a sad day for the world and music. It was a little before my time, but I've always loved his music and outlook.
Adversely, if you're a heavy metal fan, December 8th, 2004 is the anniversary of "Dimebag" Darrell's murder. I bought tickets for that very show and couldn't show up due to family issues. A blessing in disguise, looking back.
Obviously December 8th is a bad day for music/musicians.

I was in 10th grade and my mom broke the news to me about John Lennon's death the following morning as I was getting up for school and about to have my breakfast, by simply saying "John Lennon was shot"...the first thing I said was "Did he die?" and she just nodded "Yes". Coincidentally, I had just started getting into the Beatles several weeks earlier, after overhearing and joining in on a conversation between several of my classmates about the "Paul is dead" rumors back in the late 1960's.
After that Monday Night Football news flash went out I kept saying to myself, "since I didn't really like John Lennon why should I care?".
But I quickly changed my tune when I heard more details of what happened.

My husband was just going on a year old then... 1980 changed the world in ways we are only just beginning to understand.
I am convinced this time of year lends itself to many historical events... I think it has to do with the coming of the Winter Solstice, to be honest. The lack of daylight screws with people, especially the ones who are already depressed and/or crazy!
