Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Has anyone else here seen the 1976 anime version of The Little Mermaid?

I got an old VHS copy of it when I was a kid. Then I didn't know of the original Hans Christian Anderson story. I expected a happy ending and remembered being dumbfounded when it ended the way it did.

I haven't seen the anime version, but I did read an article about it on this site.

While I like the Disney version, if I become a parent and my kids evince interest in the story, I'll show them both the Disney and anime versions and see which one they like better.

As for those people who like the Disney version, like me, go easy on us, please. We're not bad people...We just like what we like.

I have the anime version on VHS at home, and it was shocking to me the first time I viewed it! Like, the Ursula character (named differently in the anime movie) requires the mermaid to cut off her tongue instead of just losing her voice. I re-watched it recently this summer after reading the article about it on Retrojunk, and while it was less scary, it was still a bit freaky. I liked the story overall though.

I also love the Disney version, and even the Disney TV show that came out after the movie.

They showed it to us in pre-school for lord knows what reason. I was scarred. I couldn't understand the concept of suicide. The Disney version came out a couple of years later.

My sister had a copy on VHS as well and absolutely loved it, I remember the sea witch and how the ending was alot more mature.

I haven\'t seen that film since I watched it in kindergarten, which is a very long time ago. I remember the ending. In all honesty I was shocked by the ending when I was a kid. I wasn\'t used to unhappy endings to stories when I was little.

I have a copy of this film, when I was on MySpleen.net years ago. It was hard to believe that Nickelodeon once aired this film, as part of the \"Special Delivery\" block. Despite of the fact that it had brief nudity.
