"Nothing Compares 2 U" seems to be highly appropriate when describing my desire to return to that decade I love dearly - the 80s. (Oh - and before any of you get your panties in a wad trying to argue that the song is 90s let me clarify that it was actually written by Prince in the early to mid 80s. Sinead just made it popular years later...)

Anyway, the song is about losing the one you love. But the lyrics are very much applicable to the process of growing up....

I dunno. Maybe I am just being cheesy right now. lol. oh well if I am.....

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

It's been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they'd only remind me of you
I went to the doctor n'guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said girl u better try to have fun
No matter what you'll do
But he's a fool
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

all the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard
But I'm willing to give it another try
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

You aren't being cheesy at all. It's a lovely song and it does have a great sensibility of nostalgia and romance to it. It's a sense that can be applied to many decades...Not just one.

I think it has some nostalgia vibes to it too. It's saying that as we grow up, we can do whatever we want, but nothing compares to the simple days of our childhoods, whether it was in the 70s, 80s, or 90s. Even though our childhoods may have had hard times in it, we would bear through them if we were given one more chance to relive our wonderful childhood days again. At least that's what the song says to me.

It was offered to Kate Bush but she didn't record it. She did do a collaboration with Prince called Why Should I Love You? and did a song that was inspired by Nothing Compares 2 U that Kate wrote herself called You're the One. It also refrences Whiter Shade of Pale. Gary Brooker from Procal Harum played organ on it. Both cuts are on her '93 Red Shoes album.

          You're the One (Kate Bush)

It's alright I'll come 'round when you're not in
And I'll pick up all my things
Everything I have I bought with you
          But that's alright too
          It's just everything I do
          We did together
And there's a little piece of you
          In whatever
          I've got everything I need
I've got petrol in the car
I've got some money with me
          There's just one problem

You're the only one I want
You're the only one I want
You're the only one I want
You're the only one I want

          It's alright I know where I'm going
I'm going to stay with my friend
Mmm, yes, he is very good looking
          The only trouble is

          He's not you
He can't do what you do
He can't make me laugh and cry
          At the same time
          Let's change things
          Let's danger it up
          We're crazy enough
          I just can't take it

You're the only one I want
You're the only one I want
You're the only one I want
You're the only one I want

          I know where I'm going
But I don't want to leave
          I just have one problem
          We're best friends, yeah?
          We tied ourselves in knots
          Doing cartwheels 'cross the floor
          Just forget it alright...
