To tell you the truth, I've never had any best friend's lasting beyond 3-5 years time. It seemed parents and/or religion always got in the way, or if they were reasonable people, they always moved away.
I started out hanging with these two kids on my block when I was around 4-6. We used to literally hang out just about every day, till our parents stopped letting us hang out all the time because we "needed to learn how to deal alone". I dunno weather this was a good thing or not, because after they moved away, I learned how to deal by myself probably more than most other people, to the point that I'm pretty much a quasi-social hermit.
Later on, at around 10, my sister's via the richer side of the family, got a house for their college years. I got to spend the night at their house, and I'd hang out with all the different kids on the block until my age became an issue with some of them, we hung out till I was around 15-16ish, with some coming and going in the mean time. We used to walk the creeks, hike the woods, walk the streets to downtown Auburn on weekends, and just literally were like kings of the town at that age. We all ran in age from the oldest being 15 to the youngest being aroung 5-7ish or so (younger siblings of my friends mostly). Those were some of the best times of my life till that god awful age of 13 hit (goddamn school and it's popularity contests).
Of course, there was also Nintendo-Roundabout as I like to call it, that is, you all gather at one friend's house for gaming, and when you are told "it's a nice day outside" you head to another friend's house to play more games....it was rad.
Bikes were a big thing for the most of us, me being the daredevil of the lot.
