I don't know what it was about that show, but it was kind of scary. The theme song for starters had that eerie feel. Then when they talked about criminals, sometimes it seemed like they were outside your window waiting to get you. And something about the way Robert Stack talked, kind of emotionless, didn't help either.

The worst part for me was when they had the segments on aliens. In the early-mid 90's there was an alien craze and I fed into it with fear (I was around 9). So when U.M. had the alien segments they would show the aliens and people being abducted or the ship landing with the ETs coming out, and I was afraid a ship would land in my backward in the middle of the night and I would be abducted. The aliens they used were of course the classic aggressive "greys" and they were realistic-looking enough (I guess they were people in suits?).

I loved that show! And no, it never creeped me out. I loved the alien segments they did along with Ghosts, Bigfoot, and The Loch Ness Monster.

Now, if you really want to get creeped out. here's the website for a talk radio show called "Coast to Coast AM" that runs every night. http://www.coasttocoastam.com/ They talk about aliens and other unusual topics.

my roommate in Okinawa was creeped out by the theme song, so i'd put the DVDs on before I went to sleep at night just to mess with him

This show was so eerie that I stopped watching it alltogether after about the 1st or 2nd season. I believe I was 10 or 11 when it started. I later got the courage to watch it when I was in HS but it was still creepy!

I have to agree with everything you said about the theme music, Robert Stack's voice, and the segments themselves having an eerie overtone to them. The criminal/fugitive sketches looked particularly scary. And the UFO and ghost ones would have me hiding under the covers worrying that I'd get abducted at night! The only non-scary ones were where a family was reunited.

Well, I love watching shows like "America's Most Wanted" and I like shows about the police and stuff so I thought "Unsolved Mysteries" was cool.

I loved it, I haven't seen it in a while though. I was into those type of shows anyways, so it never really scared me.

Growing up in the 90s, I enjoyed this show and its moderately mysterious mood. It was enough to tingle me a bit, but I wouldn't typically be freaked out by it. But there is one story that takes exception, their feature on the Chicago ghost "Resurrection Mary". The video is here:

                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMma3z4juUE

I watched this as a teenager, as a rerun on a moody evening in the summer of 1994. I was actually close to 15, and wasn't usually as easily spooked any more as I had been as a small boy. The first part of the facture actually seemed rather romantic. Then the reconstruction of Ms. Lopez-Rudnicki's story came on. Watch the video from 7.03 to 7.09 and again from 9.13 to 9.21 and note that in this, the people drive past the ghost and she has no face! I actually remember a line said by the lady's boyfriend, that "there was a black void" where her face should be, which for seems to have been cut out of the video as appears above (or maybe he said it at the end of the show, I remember them showing this faceless image again at the closing of the entire episode). This eerie animation really spooked me. I actually regressed to a long phase from my childhood and for quite a while was "afraid" of the dark (that is, not actually afraid of anything coming up on me in the dark, but when I slept, I didn't like seeing the dark around me because the spooky image would come back to me). Now I watch it and it has sentimental value for me.

scary as hell, especially when you would hear stories about people who would ring a door people and then kidnap kids at random. I had a friend who told me this when I was eight and that the police are looking for someone in a white van. For about six months white vans scared the shit out of me.

 The theme song was definitely the creepiest.

The scariest episodes I've seen were the ones where people have made contact with aliens, ones involving murder or suicide.

My favorite episode was one about a video tape discovered on the side of a road, which contained footage of a house being set on fire with a teenage voice adding a very creepy commentary, with satanic overtones.

I can only imagine what would happen if the tape were never found, but the footage appeared on youtube twenty years later.

It was an awesome show - shit, I recently bought the 'mysterious murders' box set and saw all episodes I'd never seen before. The story of the woman who was intentionally trying to kill her own daughter to collect some kind of insurance was messed up - Munchausen syndrome by proxy at its finest.

My current endeavor is getting the 'ghosts and UFOs' box set because, doG knows, I need stuff to scare the shit out of me to make my life exciting. :)

I think what made U.M. so creepy was the fact that it was a well done show. They really tried to make it as realistic as possible. If it was obviously fake then it would be laughable.

I wonder if anyone tried to 'get with' Resurrection Mary.

unsolved mysteries scared me for multipliable reasons

and the theme music, which sounds like it should belong on a cheezy horror film

version of the theme song, playing in the background)
