yeah I rememered it as a station wagon, but after doing some reading I think it was actually a jeep.

This sounds like the 90s Land of the Lost as opposed to that 70s version.
I used to watch this show all the time and really liked it. Here, it used to come on ABC on Saturday mornings in the early 90s. I know it varied from place to place.
