When I was a kid I rented kids shows from the video store. One of these involved a football player standing on a field and getting struck in the heart by a falling crystal. This crystal let him change into a giant robot that had a football type helmet. At one point in the show some guy shows him how to do a special attack. The guy throws two pool balls into the air. I think one was the white ball and the other was the 8 ball. One pool ball becomes super small and enters the other pool ball, then becomes normal size and explodes it from the inside. This is also the "super" finishing move for the giant robot. He gets really small and enters the enemy and explodes them from the inside.

Any ideas on what this might be called?

Could it have been Gordian Warrior? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordian_Warrior

It is definitely UFO Senshi Dai Apolon. The crystal falling into the guy on the football field during the rain, the old man who explains stuff, the "growing into the football robot" thing. I didn't see the stuff where the old man explodes the 8 ball though. Maybe it is in a later ep? Either way I am sure this is it. Thanks for the help. Now if only I knew where to get this in English or Japanese subbed.

An English dub, comprised of several episodes of Dai Apolon strung together (in that typical crappy 80's fashion we old-skoolers had to put up with) was released by Hi-Topps VIdeo under the name "Shadow World".

The guys over at "CollectionsDX" did a podcast episode on that you can check out here...
