Another day in the life of, eh retro apes? Tell us what some of your favorite martial arts flicks are, from the 60's to around the early 90's, before fight scenes became to heavily reliant on wires and computers. I've got a few. Earliest one, well early in the year it was made, as i hadn't even been born yet, was Billy Jack. Excellent fight scenes, though the film was a bit counter-culture preachy to me. Tom Laughlin was/is an excellent exponent of hapkido, and his instuctor, Bong Soo Han, was his stunt double for the fights.
Another was Perfect Weapon, with Jeff Speakman. The acting wasnt the greatest, but the fight scenes where well done. Speakman is an 8th degree black belt in Ed Parker's kempo karate and many of the fights are done using kempo techniques. I also liked most of Steven Seagal's early stuff, like Above the Law, Marked For death and Under Siege. Van Damm's early stuff was good, Bloodsport and Kickboxer. Van Damm's stuff got old fast, though. Bloodsport was supposedly about a real life westerner trained in ninjutsu, Frank Dux, though most of his claims have been questioned and disproved. Dux managed to convince an editor over at Black Belt Magazine to print his stuff and it got turned into a movie. And believe it or not, when i was a kid, i actually liked the american ninja movies.
