What ever happened to TGI Fridays? Then again what ever happened to family t.v. shows.
remember those shows that the whole family would gather around to watch at the end of a long weak? Shows like Family Matters, Full House, Dinosuars, Step by Step.
Even shows like Home Improvment, Roseanne. The 90's where awesome, some one please bring them back.

I'll tell you what happened: Reality TV.

    Ruined everything.

There was nothing like the shows you mentioned above. I still watch many of them, and have several of the Home Improvement seasons on DVD.

The aforementioned shows just felt good to watch. They embodied the care-free feeling of accomplishment that swelled in your chest after kissing a long week of school goodbye. They brought families together, as you said.

There's nothing like them anymore. Shows are either to raunchy for the whole family and/or are just flat out painful to watch.

And the shows that are produced this day and age that are outside the realm of "reality" are so unbelievably corny they might as well be "reality TV", ironically.

TGIF had some of the best line ups ever. Sadly people would rather watch reality shows than sitcoms. I use to look forward to Fridays so much so that I could go to my friends house and watch the shows.

A petition? Are you kidding me?

They HAVE tried to bring sit-coms back. Each year, there are new ones introduced by all-4 networks, and the vast majority of them fail... sometimes miserably.

Whether be family comedy, or just all-out sit-com, they're a dying breed of television shows that see little improvement for a future unless the concept is unique and actually funny.

Some networks actually strive to get a comedy into a second or third season ('Till Death), but not w/out major re-works... family comedy is all-but-out unless it's a dysfunctional family that tries to push the envelope. The American audience doesn't want that sappy crap anymore.

Hate to say it, but family-comedy is out.
It's given small temptations every year by one network or another, but the audience just doesn't care.

oh please. comedy is dead...and I was glad for that comdey ban I went on in '97 (right around the time TGIF was dying). but as long as we have reruns and DVD box sets, we'll always remember when television was great. and to hell with reality TV...unless it involves those who made sitcoms good even if they are combatting their demons like those ones on Celebrity Rehab.

It's a lot of factors. One of them being the networks have lost their hold on what people watch, people have a lot more choice. Also they dont' aim Network shows at Children anymore, kids have specialized cable networks (ABC Family, Cartoon Network, Nick, Disney, etc) so Networks focus on adult sitcoms

Comedy is not dead, just nothing worth a damn has been produced since the nineties. Eventually someone will get it right and they will be back. The trend has been cop and murder investigation shows. That fad will eventally fade just like most reality shows. As the popularity of most reality shows begins to die they will be dropped. They are stupidly cheap to produce but networks make no money in syndication. Everything comes back around.

I agree that regular networks are not going tobe as family oriented as they used to be. But it only takes one excellent show and word of mouth to get something going. Then everyone will copy the formula.

Am I the only one here who likes reality TV? Look, "Full House", "Family Matters" and other T.G.I.F shows were good, and I say that with all sincerity, but reality TV can be funny itself. I'm devoted to VH1's Celebreality programming, which I refer to as black comedy, because these shows present the more disturbed side of the American public, and I find that funny. I don't like "The Soup" because it makes jokes about these shows. How can you make jokes about shows that are already funny in their own twisted ways?

I'm one of those who didn't like the later seasons of Boy Meets World.

First season was great, imo! It was nice, funny, entertaining, good for the whole family, etc. The characters were enjoyable too. Topanga was unique; Corey was hyper; Minkus was the dork; Shawn was the trouble maker. The second season lost some of the appeal of the first season, but it was still okay, even though Minkus wasn't on there anymore (Lee Norris left to do the Torkelsons, iirc).

Third season and up...it turned into a teen drama. I liked the show for its comedy not its serious storylines. Too me, the show jumped shark too dramatically.
