I though Coke was going to go under. It tasted like pepsi and pepsi ran with it. Coke had to bring the old formula back under coke classic. If you are post 1984 the coke classic tastes a little different from the original formula. It seems slightly sweeter.

I don't remember the New Coke Fiasco, but I learned about it in my Marketing Management class. Regardless, I'm happy with the way things turned out. I'm a much bigger fan of Coca Cola than Pepsi. I'm currently hooked on Coke Zero.

Max Headroom was in all the commercials for New Coke. That was the only thing I liked about it.

Yes, I remember the Coke fiasco. I don't think Coke has been the same since.

I remember the end of that timeline, New Coke was renamed Coke II and Classic Coke was brought in. Eventually Coke II just went away, not enough demand for it to stay around.

I was raised on Coke, but I prefer Pepsi. I'd say I drink them about evenly, though.

New Coke was awful...it tasted more like Pepsi.
I love Coke......regular, Coke Zero, Diet Coke...and my latest love is "Diet Coke Plus with Vitamins and Minerals" - hahaha! healthy Coke...
I remember visiting England(15 years ago?)and drinking a can of Coke claiming it was "The Vegetable Drink"---Is there anyone reading this from england...do they still do this? :D

Yes I remeber it, people were so pissed that the classic Coke was replaced and I don't blame them. I think they should added it to their softdrink line rather than replace it. They acually did sell the new Coke for a few years after they brought coke classic back. I acually liked the new Coke. I think it had a smoother sweeter taste to it.

I don't drink Coke too much anymore due to it messing my stomach up from drinking so much of it growing up. When I do buy Coke I buy the Mexican inport as they use cane sugar where as the US uses high fructose corn syrup. Believe me it makes a difference and is why it taste sweeter to you.

In the UK they have much stricter laws about what they have to disclose on food packaging. So Coke still says it is made using vegetable extracts, which it is.

New Coke and Coke II were sold up until the early 2000 I believe. It is my understanding that to formula is still being sold in Canada as "President's Choice New Wave Cola"

When "Coke Classic" came back after new coke it was not "coke classic" it was made with high fructose corn syrup instead of cane sugar, which does taste different (not as good) but is much cheaper (or was at the time, it's getting more espensive again due to the cost of corn). The "New Coke" fiasco was brilliant on Coke's part, it made people LOVE Coke again when the "old" formula came back, but also masked their change from cane sugar to corn syrup, it was a brilliant evil marketing genius.

Overall I prefer Pepsi's taste (most people do, remember the Pepsi challenge) and Pepsi is a SLIGHTLY less evil company than coke (they've propped up less evil dictators and been less of a war mongerer).

Ultimately I'm an RC Cola fan.

Fantastic post Lastdaysofrain! The soft drink industry insists that the switch from sugar to high fructose corn syrup has no effect on flavor. BULL! Coke and Pepsi have changed the formula to make them taste similar to the originals.

I'm a soda nerd, and I'm a bit obsessive about the "Cola Wars"

Mexico still makes soda with cane sugar. You can also still get Coke and Pepsi with Cane Sugar in March/April because they producer "Kosher for passover" (apparently corn isn't Kosher) for our friends the Jews.

Being a gentile I still buy the stuff though and stock up for the year. I usually buy about 52-2liter bottles of it and ration it for a "once a week" treat.

I still can't find Kosher for Passover (or even Mexican) Cane Sugar Pepsi anywhere though. Which is a shame. I'd also love to try some cane sugar Cherry Coke/Pepsi.

If here in Canada you buy New Wave Cola from PC, well it's their attempt to copy Pepsi but in the process they basically recreated the New Coke flavour so that's a way to have New Coke again.

If I could get soda that had actual sugar in it instead of that evil corn syrup shit, I just might start drinking soda again. Maybe. I know I can get those all-natural kind from the health food store, but they cost a ton, so I don't bother.

Do you think they'll go back to real sugar since corn is getting expensive?

Maybe! It was the rise in the cost of sugar that prompted the switch to HFCS in the first place.
