When I was about 6, in the mid-1980s, a fireman came on a visit to my school to hold a presentation. Among other things, he showed a Donald Duck movie about, obviously, fire safety. I do not remember the whole thing, only a few images have stuck in my head. What I do remember is that, at the beginning, Donald fell asleep in his armchair, while a fire broke out around him. Then a little duck with a fire helmet appeared beside him and started acting as a "guardian angel"-type character. As I recall, perhaps several times, Donald made a mistake that caused him to have a "near-death experience", with his ghost starting to leave his body and the little duck putting it back on to revive Donald.

Can anyone remember more details of this cartoon and identify the title?

I remember this movie too. There was even a live action version of it as well.

Dang, I thought this was going to be about a Donald Duck cartoon where him, Huey, Dewey & Louie were working as fire fighters.

LOL, the cartoon in which they work as firefighters is an oldie, "Donald Duck, Fire Chief", and that I believe is the first D. Duck cartoon I ever saw, when I was about 4:

In the first version, there is a human Uncle Donald, whose nephews tell him about fire safety. He doesn't want to listen and on falling asleep he has a dream as what I described above - in which he is portrayed as Donald Duck. The cartoon part is somewhat graphic.
