I'm confused, when i was 12 in 1993 watching both TV shows based on Sonic and being a Sonic fan since 11 when i got both games on Genesis. Why were their two Sonic toons at the same year?

It's similar to that whole Ghostbuster cartoon thing in the 80's with two different GB toons.

Not really, "The Ghost Busters" wasn't even related to the Ghostbusters films, just some old TV show. The Sonic cartoons were both actually Sonic.

Why they chose to air them at the same time, I haven't a clue.

Well for the two GB cartoons, you see back in 1975 Filmation created a live-action TV show called "The Ghost Busters" which aired then in 1984 Columbia made big hit gold with "Ghostbusters" which suprised audiences and critics everywhere. Columbia decided to cash-in on their successful movie with an animated show in 1985 but Filmation that year sued Columbia over the rights of the name. Filmation wanted to have a hand to do the cartoon but Columbia chose DiC already so the two companies made an agreement to do a cartoon based on their own property. Filmation made one called "Filmation's Ghostbusters" based on their classic TV show while "The Real Ghostbusters" from DiC and Columbia was based on the movie.

They had originally planned to have Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog as being the Saturday Morning Show but when they presented the show to ABC they said that they did not feel that the show had what it took to be considered a Saturday Morning Cartoon so they started to work on Sonic the Hedgehog or otherwise considered by fans to be the SatAM Sonic Show and that became the ABC saturday morning Cartoon and then Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was to be the Weekday Morning Show and was mostly shown on Fox Originally early in the morning before most kids had to go to school.

          Hope this helps! :D

I always wondered that myself, but I was more of a SatAM fan. The other Sonic show was a little too slapsticky for me.

I heard that AoSTH was rejected by the folks DiC submitted it to, and those who rejected it asked DiC to make another Sonic cartoon. SatAM was the result.

Thanks all you've been a great help, well Filmation's Ghostbusters came out weekday mornings while Real Ghostbusters came out Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons.

So on the one hand we have "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" (AoStH), and on the other hand we have "Sonic the Hedgehog" (Sonic SatAM).

Why? I'm still not sure. Call it a fluke in broadcast history. But I can tell you one thing, more electrons have been used in talking about AoStH / Sonic SatAM than most toons on the web.

Silly? Yes. Slapstick? Sure. But looking back on the 1990's I'm sure glad to have seen Both Sonic cartoons. Let's face it, the concurrent broadcasting of both AoStH / Sonic SatAM was the best toon educational happening to appear on TV, Ever! And everyone who saw it firsthand are the lucky ones. Nothing like that will ever happen again!

Call me a big stupid kid but I like what I like. When it comes to animation I try not to over-analyze. It's suppose to be fun, remember fun?

Like many of you, I prefer the darker Sonic SatAM. Better constructed storylines. And how many times have I said that a series lives or dies by its villains? For Sonic SatAM, Dr. Robotnik and his sidekick Snively are flat-out perfect.

So when I run images back-to-back, can you tell which series is which? You're a better Toonspotter than I am. I just know that if I had known what the new century had in store for me, I'd have saved more money for cable fees and dvd purchases, LOL!!

I sure did, and you wanna know why? She looked sexy but she acted smart - and that's very sexy! Sally's body only had a slight shape to it yet her appearance suggests sexiness because for the most part her character is played straight.
                                She's smart, clever and resourceful.

I've been wanting to talk about this.

CBS caught hell from parental watchdog organizations and educational groups for the explosion in Superhero cartoons that started in 1966 and hit maximum by 1970.
When the network searched for parent approved, non-violent children's entertainment the good folks at Filmation offered CBS an easy out with their "The Ghost Busters" series reuniting the veteran comedy team of Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch.

No surprise to me that this series bombed on Saturday mornings, but Filmation still held the rights to the name!

Well, you know what happened when Columbia Pictures wanted to talk to Filmation about using that name for their new movie? Columbia paid Filmation for a license to use that name.

When "Ghostbusters" the 1984 movie becam a megahit, Filmation wasted no time making a "Ghostbusters" cartoon based on their dead/ live action series from 1975, "The Ghost Busters".

Let me be clear here - who wanted to see a cartoon about two guys and a gorilla as ghost hunting detectives? NO BODY!! repeat NO BODY!!

                                      Kong, Spencer and Tracy, WTF??

Everybody wanted to see Ray, Peter, Winston and Egon.

That 1984 movie changed everything. The 1986 Filmation cartoon was harmless fun made LAME in the aftermath of that awesome movie.

I can't say enough good things about the awesome "The Real Ghostbusters" cartoon from 1986 produced by Columbia/Sony Pictures Television and DiC Entertainment. It was everything a real GB fan could have hoped for in an animated series.

And shame on Filmantion for trying to cash in on the success of the Columbia Pictures movie. Sure they owned the rights to the name, but after that wonderful movie everybody knew there was only one true Ghostbusters - Ghost Busters - GhostBusters, you get the idea. No matter how you spell it there was no point in trying to fool anyone anymore.

Well Filmation did sued Columbia over the name rights in 1985 and they even wanted to have a hand in doing the preposed animated show but then DiC was chosen. Have you seen my history lesson on why there were two GB cartoons?
