I've been wanting to talk about this.
CBS caught hell from parental watchdog organizations and educational groups for the explosion in Superhero cartoons that started in 1966 and hit maximum by 1970.
When the network searched for parent approved, non-violent children's entertainment the good folks at Filmation offered CBS an easy out with their "The Ghost Busters" series reuniting the veteran comedy team of Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch.
No surprise to me that this series bombed on Saturday mornings, but Filmation still held the rights to the name!
Well, you know what happened when Columbia Pictures wanted to talk to Filmation about using that name for their new movie? Columbia paid Filmation for a license to use that name.
When "Ghostbusters" the 1984 movie becam a megahit, Filmation wasted no time making a "Ghostbusters" cartoon based on their dead/ live action series from 1975, "The Ghost Busters".
Let me be clear here - who wanted to see a cartoon about two guys and a gorilla as ghost hunting detectives?
NO BODY!! repeat
NO BODY!!Kong, Spencer and Tracy, WTF??
Everybody wanted to see Ray, Peter, Winston and Egon.
That 1984 movie changed everything. The 1986 Filmation cartoon was harmless fun made
LAME in the aftermath of that awesome movie.

I can't say enough good things about the awesome "The Real Ghostbusters" cartoon from 1986 produced by Columbia/Sony Pictures Television and DiC Entertainment. It was everything a real GB fan could have hoped for in an animated series.

And shame on Filmantion for trying to cash in on the success of the Columbia Pictures movie. Sure they owned the rights to the name, but after that wonderful movie everybody knew there was only one true Ghostbusters - Ghost Busters - GhostBusters, you get the idea. No matter how you spell it there was no point in trying to fool anyone anymore.
