        - Martin Scorsese

        - James Cameron (only because he's always kicking the bar of special/visual fx higher as for story telling....hmm,)

        - Antoine Fuqua

        - Martin Campbell

        - Tony Scott (even though he makes most of his movies like trailers)

        - Edward Zwick (he can make any lead actor/actress a heroic badass e.g. Denzel Washington, Daniel Craig, Tom Cruise, even 90s rom-com queen Meg Ryan!)

        - Michael Bay (YES I SAID IT! He's got a good eye for action and NOTHING else)

When I see threads like this, it always makes me wonder: Do most people even pay any attention to who directs a given movie? The only time I even notice who the director is is when it's some uber-famous one like spielberg (even then, I sometimes still don't notice).

I may add Guillermo del Toro to my previous list but first I must watch The Hobbit.

                                Kind of echoing here, but

Stanley Kubrick (absolute favorite, I'm obsessed with the man)
Akira Kurosawa (another film school icon)
Hayao Miyazaki (sad about his retirement, but what a career)
David Fincher (Seven is one of my top movies of all time)
Michel Gondry (what an imaginative and colorful filmmaker)
Christopher Nolan (from the first time I rented Memento on vhs)
                                Peter Jackson

And the rest are mostly based on early flicks, not so much later stuff.
Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Ridley Scott, John Carpenter
