Am I the only one who misses actual special effects. CGI is nice and has its place. But I really miss make up effects that require actual work. Like scale model effect. Look at the original Star Wars trilogy. They made actual scale models of the ships and it looked great. Now its done on computers, but doesn't have the 'love' that the scale models did. Gremlins are another great example. They looked great.
Another example I can think of is the Dark Crystal. Yeah, they were Muppets. But it was an awe inspiring movie. You got lost in the movie and there was no CGI involved. Matte paintings and hard work brought you to a new world. They don't make movie like that anymore. And its really sad. Movie making used to be about an art style, now its about profits.

I absolutely agree with you. It'd be nice to see a trend in movies that goes away from CGI.

Like having the 'monster' of the movie actually being a physical effect rather than a CGI 'boo'.
I think that cgi helps to create great battle scenes and other movie tricks that could have not been done before. However I do see both used in the harry potter series which is a great mix
of the two. But harry potter is the best example of how great computer effects can add to a movie. anaconda however does not!
However......... I still miss the freddy kruger type effects that we don't see too much anymore

Movie effects just don't have that same magic to them anymore. Nobody's amazed by it cause they already know how it's done, but movies like Roger Rabbit and Jurassic Park were great breakthroughs at the time they came out and are still considered great classics. With computers now it seems like the movies just get done quicker and I think the directors are more concerned with how good the effects are coming out when they should make sure the story works okay too. In fact Bart and Lisa pointed that out when they met Randall Curtis (AKA George Lucas).

I know the reason George thought he needed to replace the puppet Yoda with CG is because it was the only way to do the lightsaber fights, but by the time they did it people already knew the secret. Movies were just more surprising when they were limited to what they had to use back then.

I know Labyrinth another good example: amazing movie and most of all NO CGI !

I agree with the most of you. Since when is there a Hollywood Contract that says "You are only allowed to use CGI for your creature effects and nothing else". No stop-motion, men in suits, puppetry etc. Come on! I ran into some movies where they don't use CGI.

Speaking of Wallace & Gromit I went to see Flushed Away when it came out thinking it was another Aardman movie (and I knew it was CG and not stop motion) and it was filled with so many crazy jokes and cultural references and stuff that it didn't feel like anything Aardman would normally do. The characters were still in Aardman style but it felt like Wallace & Gromit with Shrek humor. This was probably why Dreamworks and Aardman split up since I'm sure they had a lot of creative differences with this movie, but I did enjoy it nonetheless.

The thing about CGI...is now you always know the answer to the question - "How did they do that?" I remember when I never used to know how they pulled something off in a movie...and there are still older pre-CGI movies that leave me scratching my head over how they did some of the effects. Today though, you always know everything is done on a computer.
Look at Aliens (Alien pt. 2) and then Aliens 3. That CG alien looked pitiful compared to that kickass hand-made queen alien from the previous film. CG = Crappy Graphics
And dammit, Godzilla needs to be some guy in a suit. That's 75% of the charm and appeal.

It is best done with a mix of CGI and old-school effects on big pictures like Jurasic Park where there are obviously no actual dinosaurs to be filmed (But they did make a lot of models and robotics) whereas some movies cheese me off by doing a straight up car chase in CG. Get some stunt drivers and do it for real!
By the way, that CGI Godzilla was from a Japanese film made last year. I will get the title later, but right now I don't know, but it is a Japanese drama-film. Godzilla was used in a fantasy sequence.

I'm a big fan of old Roman movies. Ben Hur was made a long time ago, they didn't need any cgi then.

Who else is glad they're going back to the old fashioned style of effects making for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?

I totally agree, I think there is more craftmanship and art involved when you don't rely on a computer to do everything for you. CGI cheapens things for me. I didn't think highly of Jim Henson productions when MirrorMask came out since it was basically all computerized.
The best classics, like Wizard of Oz and Citizen Kane, are great in part for the amazing special effects done through completely traditional methods. It's like then, artists had to be creative if they wanted to make an effect. Now CGI is a huge cop-out.
Also, bad traditional special effects in today's standards (Clash of the Titans for example, though the s.e. were great for its time) creates good comedy.
