Well I was thinkin of the whole group of friends in the basement with soda, pizza, and chips kind of thing.
Don't. It's a waste of time and thinking power that could better be spent on a console game with a much more compelling story, pre-programmed stats and mechanics, and just the ease of all the fun without all the bullcrap. If you're looking for the social aspect, there are so much better things you could be doing, and most of the people playing D&D aren't exactly the most interesting or fun types anyway.
Making a character was the best part, especially for us since we used this computer program to put in all our stats, come up with backstories, and print them out on these really neat-looking glossy papers. But again, so many other games let you do that now the process of character creation's lost its value unless it's something you're really into.
All you really need to concern yourself with is this:

I honestly never played a D&D game that wasn't a videogame. My level of geekiness never went that high. We were huge fans of board games in my house and we played some fantasy-based games like Dark Tower. But never a game that required a Dungeon Master.
