Who all out there is potentially in its path and what are you doing to prepare. If you are along the coast you should probably evacuate. It could turn out to be a once in a lifetime storm.

I'm nowhere near it, but please if you are in the surge area GET OUT. Hurricane Ike's 15 foot storm surge destroyed much of Galveston island and all of the Bolivar Peninsula here in Texas. While Galveston island was severely damaged; the seawall built after the 1900 hurricane prevented total destruction. Most of the US coast has little protection.

If you live inland you are probably safe unless you live in a mobile home. It's better to stay home and keep the roads clear so the people that need to evacuate can. Just fill your bathtub to flush the toilets and stock up on food, drinking water, gas, batteries and all the other important stuff.

I thought it was going to strike the Georgia area, but now I don't think it's going to.

Hurricanes are no joke. Heed local emergency instructions and do what you must to stay safe.

I'm a survivor of Hurricane Donna of 1960.

While I may not have many memories from 1960, you bet I remember that hurricane! My family did not evacuate so I remember riding the storm out in our brand new house just outside the naval base in Norfolk, VA.

I could feel the whole house straining against the storm and my parents caught me near one of the upstairs windows trying to look out between the 2x4's. My mom grabbed me away from the window but not before I got a good look outside. It looked like that scene from The Wizard of Oz as Dorothy looks out her bedroom widow from inside the tornado, stuff was flying sideways! It was the most unreal event I've ever seen.

Hurricane Donna, as it turns out, was a very unusual storm:

I'm in Kitty Hawk, NC right now. I have no intention of evacuating. I have no where to go actually. My closest family is in Atlanta and my safe havens are going to be hit hard by this storm.

I bought water and a camping stove, and I brought all outside furniture inside yesterday.

My ex boyfriend keeps texting me, urging me to leave. He needs to worry about his own family in Cape Cod, MA.

I'm in Buffalo. I should be good, but they say it could bring us a little rain. It seems the media is overdoing it a bit. NBC is doing a second half hour of Nightly News. I understand it could be really bad, but it's pretty simple. A hurricane's coming. If you are near there, GTFO. No need for an hour of coverage imo.

They didn't do much of anything with Ike before or after, but because it is hitting where the media lives they are making a bigger deal out of it. It will only be a cat 1 by the time it gets to the NJ area. The people that really have to worry is those along the coast near NC and VA.

Edit: New forcast have it hitting North Carolina as only a category 1. Yea the media needs to shut up already.

I'm outside its reach here in Baltimore. We might get a bunch of rain but won't experience the brunt of the storm.

I glad I'm not getting the full force of this Hurricane (we're only getting some rain on Sunday), but the fact that I experienced (and lived) through previous ones still frightens me.

Fayetteville Is just just outside it's reach, they say we will get stronger then normal winds and rain but it's nothing to worry about.

Sadly, a few people have used this excuse to cancell coming to my graduation party...it should be long past by 7 at night anyway!

We're getting hit, but they expect it to be a tropical storm by the time it gets here, so here's hoping. I'm quite far inland now, but I know they're evacuating along the coast where I grew up. I am no stranger to hurricanes, so I'm not concerned about such a weak storm. Most dangerous part for this part of the country is usually forming tornadoes. Flooding will be the biggest issue with this, if anything. 10+ inches of rain.

I'm snuggling up on the couch all weekend. I'm sick and very tired from working all week for my husband. I'll have to make a list of things to watch/read.

I'm very lucky to be in California while all this is going on, but I'm very concerned about my house in NJ. No one's watching it, so I don't know what will happen, I just hope I can come back to my house undamaged.
