I'm optimistic about this subject. Certainly is a possibility but for now and many years to come(centuries more likely) there will be no Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai for us.

Interesting that you sould mention that.
Back in 2009 there was a panel discussion on the true nature of a time machine. By consensus the panel members agreed that a time machine can not send you to a time before the machine itself actually existed.
That, of course, ruins the plot of some favorite sci-fi movies.
Time travel is such a ridiculous notion. There's so many variables. Liukangx brought up a brilliant point. Why didn't they come back in the machine to our time? Even if a "panel" agreed that you couldn't travel back to a time before the machine's existence, that in itself doesn't make sense because the past, present and future would exist at the same time every second of every day. So the machine was ALWAYS around.
But yeah, if they do make one I'd totally go back to 2002 and watch the good Sponge Bob episodes.

I think that they can"T come back becuz of time being not something linear.
my guess is that with every time-jump (back or forwards) the traveler is creating an alternate timeline , similiar to ours but still different.
So once you decide to make a jump , the possibilities to jump back to that exact point in multiple timelines and space are literally infinite.

There are many theories on this and yet more to come. Closed time-like curves/Wormholes/Cosmic strings etc...
But even in this all-you-can-eat buffet of ideas there still no law that prevents time traveling.
Hawking proposed a "Chronology Protection Conjecture" to eliminate time travel from the laws of Physics. He failed.
Unable to find an answer he recently changed his mind. Apparently time travel seems to be consistent with the known laws of Physics.

if the story about this thing is true then we are not living in the present time but actually in the past and it seems that the aforementioned persons time machine broke down and caught on fire after he went into the past and therefore history has already been altered some.

You should just save yourself the trouble and buy the DVDs. They probably are a lot cheaper than a Delorean time machine and a case of plutonium.
I’m really not overly knowledgeable on quantum physics but isn’t there a huge disagreement on the perception of time? I’m just curious how anyone can give a definitive example of time travel when no one can, beyond a theory, explain what time is and how it progresses (if it does actually advance). I’m just curious.
