I remember when I first started watching the Simpsons, Homer was more of a hothead . My question is what season was Homer's temper toned down and why?

Before 1997 Homer Simpson and Al Bundy (Married . . . with Children), had a similar desire - they both wanted to promote family unity and togetherness with shared activities.

This was the Homer Simpson that I found the most funny. Each episode Homer wanted the family to do something together and it always ended in disaster.

The magic of the early Simpsons was watching each member of the family mess-it-up, and a lot of these early episodes ended with Marge and Homer in bed, shes convincing him that things will go better next time. The fun was we all knew it wouldn't.

Executive producer Mike Scully is often sited as the driving force behind the "edgy" Homer. Due to viewer feedback, by season 11, Homer became less angry and more of an oaf when compared to his earlier years.

No, no! Homer was institutionalized for wearing a pink shirt to work and they were concerned about his anger, so they kept him. Not to mention when they went to Dr. Monroe for family therapy and ended up shocking each other the whole time.

The difference between that episode and the one I'm referring to is that Ned willingly went to a mental hospital while Homer was forced to go to one.

I still say Homer became a real dumbass after all those knocks to the head when he fell down the Springfield gorge TWICE in Season 2.

As for his temper, he still seems to have a lot of anger even in the current episodes. If he isn't being retarded, he's lashing out at someone.

I've seen him from the first season being somewhat of an Asshole from the First season and becoming the guy you like to hate. As the show progressed, Home became less Assy Yet more stupider. Yet as the show progressed Homer's anger seem so random that he goes from Lovable to Asshole and back again. Hell it's gotten to the point the they use the strangulation as a flagship and I don't like it! I mean Home is a lovable character but they're writing him so wrong anymore...

Agreed, it's funny how they started as physical caricatures with more depth and feelings, and now they are practically a cultural institution but the characters are really flat and one-dimensional.

Homer was always so unpredictable at times. You never knew what he was going to do. And yes, they are writing him in the modern episodes.
