Remember a couple of years ago, when all of the hyper-conservatives accused "secular progressives" of attempting to "kill Christmas?"

Well, I've stumbled across the inversion of that scenario: The War on Halloween.

http://cartersville.patch.com/articles/the-war-on-halloween

In a lot of communities, trick or treating is being replaced by "Trunk or treating" - read the article, it is HORRIBLE. Elsewhere, fall festivals are slowly beginning to replace actual Halloween parties at many community functions, and "Dress up as your favorite book character day" has become a placeholder for what USED to be school-functioned Halloween celebrations in many schools throughout America.

So what gives? Are religious interest groups and over protective parents just doing what they think is "best" for their kids, or are they genuinely trying to kill Halloween as a holiday?

It sure seems like it. For the last 10 years or so, Halloween has became less and less popular in my opinion. I mean when I was a kid, the streets were filled with children on Halloween night. Now the streets are practically empty, a few groups of kids with their parents here and there.

Even Halloween TV specials are not common anymore. The channels that do actually show some, show them later in the month now and there's not nearly as many as there used to be. I think AMC is the only channel that still does horror movie marathons.

Some schools still do Halloween class parties. I graduated in 2008 and I remember that year at school, we had halloween activities including pumpkin carving contests and we could dress up that day.

So you're asking if there is a national conspiracy between parents and the religious to make Halloween disappear?

      I'd have to say no.

Aren't Christmas and Halloween relatively new in American society? I'm pretty sure my great grand parents weren't dressing up as Abe Lincoln and Betsy Ross trick or treating for beef jerky.

I think holidays come and go like fads. If big business didn't remind us through advertising every year, I'm sure most of us wouldn't even notice them.

Xmas & halloween have been celebrated here in the states for an extremely long time. The exact method of the celebration though changes over time. In the early 1900s, kids did dress up, but usually not as specific characters. It was more about looking scary. Also, while they did go door to door, it was more about playing pranks than getting candy/treats. The practice goes way way back almost to the beginning of halloween, when people dressed in scary costume, running around making noise & playing pranks was supposed to scare away evil spirits. The practice got changed to trick or treating more recently in an attempt to 'clean up" the holiday & rid it of the pranking type stuff.
Apparently the first recorded trick or treat was in 1911, and the practice was commonplace by the 1950s.

          An interesting discovery:
In 2005 a child in Lehi, Utah was given a vial of cocaine at a Trunk-or-Treat.

My town usually has to announce which day we'll be allowed to celebrate it on, if it takes place on an odd day and God forbid it falls on a Sunday.

Sounds like the story of Usher II which was kind of a spin-off of Fahrenheit 451.

Basically sick of people being offended and crying crocodile tears over the stupidest issues, the government decided to ban anything they felt to be offensive and keep people ignorant and rather stupid. Long story short, a guy builds a haunted house attraction which they want torn down, because vampires, ghosts and the like all hinted there was an afterlife - -.

Honestly I think people are way too sensitive these days and that killing Halloween is an idiotic idea that only punishes the children and cheats them out of one of the best experiences in life.

This War on Halloween HAS been happening since Christianity became a stronghold. (I don't mean to be Religious, but this is true especially in the Calvinist Protestant Beliefs, I'm a Lutheran Protestant, so we celebrate Halloween in a moderate view and we celebrate Reformation Day a little more so).

But this guy named Jack Chick REALLY will haunt kids on Halloween when they read this....

Honestly, I'm like Ebeneezer when it comes to Halloween because I feel that it's another working day.

Since when is Justin Bieber a man? I'm not saying that he's not guy-ish, but....c'mon, people. What happened to the manly (well, at least much manlier) pop stars?

Something big needs to happen regarding Halloween. It needs to be made an official Holiday where there's no work or school Barak Obama needs to interrupt our tv shows to make a statement about how awesome Halloween is.

Dude I've got no issue with Halloween, but its not important. Its a chance for people to dress up and party and for kids to get candy... I am surprised to see adults so attached to the holiday.

Just wait till they set a tax for anything unhealthy... $30 will sound cheap.

Now there's a war on NOT to wear Stereotypical Clothes for Halloween!

Don't dress-up as Fu Manchu, or a Native American, or even an Arabian!

Maybe we should just wear Flesh-colored clothes for Halloween and say "We're the least-offensive people ever"!
