I remember seeing l33t on a local bbs way back in 95. Ultima Online was released in 97.

I used to play majormud there and was one of the bords sysops, sometimes I would stumble into strange conversations and not have a clue of what they were talking about.
A few years later I found out what it was called.
It only came up on BBSs that had filters in place to prevent certain things from being discussed. Of course, like always, people found ways around the filters. If you weren't hanging out on boards with filters, then you would have had no reason to see it.
