I know, not often you get a topic started by me, but I was just curious about what people thought about cable now-a-days and what they show on it. Personally, I feel I could go without cable with no problems at all and when I have kids, I don't even plan on having it. When I was a kid, and we did have cable, most of my television watching was still through the "big 3".

Do you feel this is too extreme, or do you feel the kids are better off without having it. What are your opinions on all these cable stations in general, and their programming?

If there's a topic like this already (and I really don't think there is), feel free to close this one.

I think cable is repetitive these days. I mostly watched the Big 3 as a kid as well. I don't have cable right now but I don't think it's too extreme. I can live without cable myself, my kids feel the same way.

We had cable when i was little, up until about 92.
then the network we where with went ass up and foxtel took over and we desided it was to much to pay for mostly crap.
but the year before we disconnected my best mate got it so he was my tv for all of the 90s.
and like ducktalesfan1977 siad about it being repetitive now is so true.
i was going to get it recently but most of it was just the same, CRAP.
all reality and shit non-music playing mtv, plus nicks crap now sso who would want it.
this being australian cable, that is.

      IM NOT GERTS LOVE CHILD!!

MTV don't even bother playing videos and if they do it's usually crap. They might as well change their name to RTV-Reality Television

In the late 90s, I renamed MTV, STV...SexTV cause everything seemed so sex-oriented. MTV has gone down a lot and I neve really watched it much and can tell this, since it rarely plays music stuff. VH-1 too, which I used to watch faithfully as a kid.

they should just release everything on DVD and let the cable company's die and the Brain Washing Bastard's that work for CNN and Fox News can all go to Hell.

I'm surprised you're not overwhelmed over hte fact that there's nothing on them actually worth watching. :P

We have Digital Cable on one television in our house. The other TVs have basic. The only station I occasionally watch is the AZN station (yes, my obsession with Asian stuff shows lol). I just wish they had better programming...and some more music-shows.

                  My grandmother has Dish Network in her room. She watches the Soap Opera channel. >_>;;

in that case people should be given the option to pick only the channels that they want and not pay for a whole bunch of channels that they never watch.

I know I probably could. I have a TV in my room that collects dust for the most part. I usually only turn it on...to provide sound...to make my folks think I'm actually watching it when my bf is over...

That aside, I use it for my games or DVDs (region 2 ones) or to watch Law & Order: SVU or CI, The Office, or My Name is Earl. I think these are the only shows I watch almost every week regardless, and ironically, all are non-cable, even though Law & Order you can catch on USA, and when it's late at night, and I"m trying to go to sleep, I do watch it.

Yes, if TV ads become as controlling as DVD ads, I'm getting my digital cable uninstalled, reinstalling the antenna, and just use the TV for videogames and the news.

and cops and AMW of course.

                        No joke.

My mother wants to get rid of our Digital Cable; she has wanted to for years. I'm with her on it, but, the only reason she doesn't, is because of the cable on the computer. It comes in like a package or something. It's Comcast Digital Cable, so if we get rid of the Digital Cable on the TV, we have to get rid of it on the computer, or either the price shoots up a lot. I forgot how much it was. It's terribly annoying.

Cartoon Network nowadays is literally a piece of shit, the last year for that station that was even remotely good was 2003 it has really lost all of it's purpose and does not live up to it's name anymore at all. I miss the way that Cartoon Network was prior to 2003.

I liked how it was back in the mid-90s, to be completely honest. I liked how they had "Saturday Japanime" (only once a week, meaning, it's not overshown like it is now) and that Retro Wednesday and stuff like that. I used to stay up past my bedtime for the Retro Wednesday stuff. Catanooga Cats, I used to like watching that...even though I preferred the music featured in the show as opposed to the show itself.

Yes, there is a song about that. I think it's called 57 Channels (and nothing's on) by Bruce Springsteen (I think). Correct me if I'm wrong.
