Also, laptop hard drives usually tend to be less reliable and aren't designed to be ran for hours on end like desktop hard drives.

And, you should be able to find a 2.5" external hard drive case and use your laptop hdd through usb :)

      If you have a Mac, it's even easier, even if it's an old model that has a SCSI interface, or a newer one which has firewire. You set the notebook to be in target disk mode, then connect it to the main computer using a SCSI cable or firewire cable, depending on your model, start up the main machine, and the hard drive from the laptop will appear as another hard disk on the main Mac's desktop. This is nothing new and has been done for years.

        Eh, it requires the ability to mess with hardware, but just the laptop HD with a battery and a USB connector and turn it into an external HD.

          and whats wrong with powering the hdd off the usb :?
