I just got a newspaper article saying that the Baiji, a rare, nearly blind river dolphin that lived in Beijing was declared extinct. Reserchers were searching in the Yangtze River, which is where the dolphin lived, for six weeks and found nothing.

The Baiji is the first aquatic mammal to go extinct since overfishing and hunting killed the Caribbean Monk Seal over 50 years ago. It's said that boat traffic, overfishing and pollution were the main reasons it went extinct. Researchers say they could of missed a couple dolphins, but they won't survive long in the wild.

I think that's depressing. It makes me wonder just how many more animals have to become extinct before we learn that we have to take extra measures to protect animals and their habitats.

Were we able to get tissue samples before we lost them?
At the very least, at some point in the future we may be able to clone them back into existance.

I hear there are several groups collecting and preserving tissue samples from as many differant endangered species as possible for exactly this reason.

they should make endangered animal chimeras! splice the genes together, and kapow! a new dominant species rising from the ashes!

Thylacine is another name for it too.

Trivia Fact: The closest reletive to the Tasmanian Tiger is the Tasmanian Devil.

Its actually referred to as the Tasmanian Tiger Wolf.
But its official name was Thylacine, which sounds like a chemical.

This makes me wonder how long it's been when word of an entire species was last extinct. The Baiji dolphin could be the newest one for our recent era.

Those Tasmanian tigers look more like giant lemurs or fossa to me. I do feel bad for those dolphins cause they are really cool animals, but it sounds to me like they were kinda disadvantaged from the start being blind and all that. Not that I'm trying to justify our allowing it to go exctinct, that's inexcusible.

Yes, the Baiji is the most recent extinction.

Oh, and the dolphins lived in a murky river, so eyesight wasn't needed that much. They had their sonar to help them along.
