Hey guys,

I'm finally taking the plunge and getting a smart phone. I've always had a low tech phone, but am now seeing I need to upgrade. There are a ton of options out there. After a bit of research I have narrowed it down to the Samsung Galaxy 2 and the iPhone 4S. Basically droid vs IOS. Any suggestions, tips?

I refuse to pay for a data plan so no smart phone for me however I have friends that have both. I do have a Galaxy Tab and most of the apps that work on the phones will work with it. There are a ton of free apps out there for the Android (most ad supported). Android is more open source where as Apple is more proprietary. There is a solution however and it is called iOS jailbreaking. Jailbreaking basically gives you root access to the operating system. Once you jailbreak an iPhone you then will have access to the free uncensored stuff.

As for which is better they are both good and you will not be disappointed with either. The Galaxy 2 is larger. The iPhone 4S is more user friendly, but you can do more with the Galaxy 2 out of the box. Also the Galaxy is a little faster overall, but not by much. If I went out and bought one tomorrow I would probably get the Galaxy, but that is just me.

There's a ton of buzz over the new Samsung Galaxy S3 to be released this month. Samsung has signed on with all wireless carriers in the USA. That could mean that the newest smart phone may be easier to get with each carrier trying lure in new customers.

Too bad the USA will not be getting the global quad-core processors like the rest of the world. We're limited to dual-core processors again.

Yeah, the S3 is kind of throwing me off. Not sure if I should wait. I've been using an outdated phone for years, but I don't want to get something that's on its way out in terms of technology. Not that I feel I need to have the latest and greatest phone, I just want to make sure it's compatible with the latest internet.

The geek press is still talking about the recent release of Nokia's Lumia 900 with the Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" platform.

          BEST Lumia 900 Review...

I've wanted a windows phone myself and this looks like the device made for me. Both Nokia and MS have had trouble getting any traction in the smart phone market and the Lumia 900 is still a compromise when compared to popular smart phones.

When I say compromise, I mean Nokia, Windows and ATT. Put them all together and let's just say I'm cheering for the underdogs, lol.

Yeah... I will probably get one myself when my contract is up in the fall. I've been going over my text limits and frequently need internet access when I'm on the road. I'm crying over the fees for a data plan, though.

What size data plan do you suggest? I was thinking of just getting the smallest plan, and upgrading if I need to.

I had a smart phone for a few months (Samsung Stratosphere)...but I got tired of paying the extra money for it each month, and I hardly ever used all the extra features. So I went back to using a basic phone.
