Did you guys know that iTunes is gonna be replacing DVDs. Well it is. First I'll start off with VCRs, I heard that sometime soon no one will have a VCR whatsoever, it will fade out just like Beta tapes did (which was before my time). I also heard that after DVDs start to fade out, video stores such as Suncoast, F.Y.E, and Blockbuster would be going out of business.

So far they have some movies released on the iTunes music store. As for TV show, they have the complete first season of Johnny Bravo and some episodes of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. You get to select the episodes you want to buy instead of just getting the whole season or series. It's all gonna happen in the future where going to the video store is a thing in the past. People would download it from iTunes instead and put it on the iPod. There is also the AOL video which has Avatar the Last Airbender, Spongebob, Blue's Clues, Freakazoid, Animaniacs, etc. (Animaniacs and Freakazoid are temporary downloads)

Just you wait till they release FIOS nation-wide. :o

Then on-demand services will be the norm, and video stores will REALLY start to fade.

My brother, who works at Sears, swears that the VHS will go the way of the dodo within the year. I haven't heard anything about DVDs going the same way, but I can see how that could happen. Kind of a shame, that. I like owning things like movies in a tangible format, and this TIVO and "on demand" trend is making it so you can't really own movies. Not only that, but it seems like it will eventually mean you couldn't record stuff off the TV on a permanent basis. TIVOs only have so much space for recording, after all.

I wonder if there will come a time when VCRs and DVD burners become illegal. After all, you're recording copyrighted information and, while you're not necessarily selling it, the fact that you're in possession of someone else's copyrighted product could become a legal issue if things keep going the way they have been.

I like having stuff in a tangible format too. Why would VCR's be illegal? The companies that released the films release them. Besides it would make some films that don't have a DVD release as lost films that would only be sold as bootlegs. I don't like the concept behind Itunes and all that. I get CD's for music. Tangible formats all the way!

I'm surprised this comes as good news to people of a retro forum, you guys aren't very loyal retro fans are you? FYI, VHS has been dead for years yet many many collectors still like to collect VHS just for the rarity or nostalgic value. A jump in media distribution isn't going to change their minds.

I didn't post this as good news or bad news I'm just telling you what happens in the future. Though it might be bad news since it could cause us to lose nostalgica. Well hopefully we will see some good classics on iTunes and AOL video.

Oh and I forgot to mention yes VHS has been dead for years but I also heard that soon no one is going to have a VCR what-so-ever. Have you ever heard of Beta tapes. Those have been around before my time.

I don't see a single person on this thread suggesting that this is good news.

I don't think it will be itunes to bring everything into the digital world for one very important reason. You cannot redownload your stuff from itunes. I bought about ten albums off of itunes and when my ipod whent tits up I lost it all... I will never use itunes again.

It WILL happen though. just not by itunes.

Yeah because there is also AOL Video Downloads. They had episodes of Freakazoid, Flintstones, etc.

So far you've listed products from Apple AND AOL, neither of which I will buy anything from. I don't believe DVDs will be replaced by either, not one bit. There has to be a reason something is made obsolete before it actually becomes obsolete...and from what I've seen, people would much rather have the physical entity of a movie than a digital entry in a compact device. VHS tapes may be going away purely because of their short life spans, but DVDs clearly aren't even close to being on their way out. The DVD format is so widely used these days, not just for movies, but for file storage, music, etc....it's like proclaiming McDonald's is going to go out of business because of the growing population of Cheesecake Factory franchises. Sure, McDonald's has been around a long time, but the food is cheaper and still tastes good enough for a meal once in a while.

DVD's will not be going away anytime soon. They are just coming out with the new Blue Ray and HD DVD's. The electronic companies and the movie studios spent way to much money developing this new technology to allow it to become obsolete so quickly. Anyway look how long it took the DVD to take the lead over VHS tapes and the vhs is still around. The VHS was available in the late 70's or early eighties, not sure of the exact timing, and it took until the mid to late 90's to be surpassed by the DVD. Even if a new technology was introduced and becomes semi popular it would be at least 10-20yrs before it finally takes hold. People still use vcr's, I know I do occassionally, and people do not like to change, especially when change costs them more money.
Personally I like to actually have a physical disc or whatever technology they will have in the future than to rely on a machine to get my movies.

What he said. The only thing thats going to do away with DVD is HD-DVD or Blue Ray and its going to be a long time until the masses are going to dish out the cash for an HD-TV and a next generation video player. HD is the future, but even with a decent high speed internet connection, it takes a good while to download a full movie in HD. Why bother when you can just pick the movie up from Walmart, throw it in the player and watch it?
