My mother is crazy and so is my grandfather (mother's father). I feel nuts sometimes as well, but I've always attributed it to my imagination. Where as my mother and grandfather show everything from angry out-bursts, paranoia, deep depression to bathing with Tide (the clothing wash detergent).

I pretty much feel this is something that gets passed on - craziness. If the craziness is from a physical disease, then its understood. But, does anyone feel mental illness is something that is passed on to children?

I basically don't want to have any kids, knowing that they may be crazy. It would hurt me pretty badly knowing any children are given something that harms them, let alone my own flesh and blood.

I generally think it is inheritable. I believe it runs in families. Or, to quote Mortimer Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace, "gallops."

My psych text book says that if one of your parents have a mental illness, there is a chance that you will also get it, but the right conditions have to be in place for it to happen.

Yeah it's been scientificaly proven that it's hereditary. Everybody's crazy in their own way no matter what though. I don't think you should let it discourage you from having kids if that's what you want to do. Mental Illness has been around forever and the methods of treating it are always advancing so go nuts, I say.

              It's hereditairy.

then again, some incidents can cause mental retardation. There was this time, some guy was using a circular saw, one of the large wood chips hit his head, and made him mentally retarded since.

just to get people started...this is like asking if it is an inherited gene or a sickness/disease basically, correct? so I would argue that this as well as the question "Is homosexuality passed down from generation to generation, or a sickness/disease?" it is inconclusive until we get better technology.

Mental illness may be hereditary, but you have to consider the idea that if you are raised by parents who are crazy, chances are you are going to be crazy yourself. Lets say your biological parents are both very mentally healthy and stable. You wind up being adopted by parents who are mentally unhealthy. Your chances of having mental problems increase dramatically. A lot of what your parents do and say to you has A GIGANTIC impact on what your personality will be.

In my family, alcoholism and anxiety disorders are very common. However, I don't blame it on my genes that I abuse alcohol or have an anxiety disorder. I know that it is because of what I was raised with, and the habits that my parents had that makes up a big part of what I am today.

Yeah I guess Mental Illness could be hereditary.

Shoot everyone's Crazy at some point anyways just that some is a little
                      bit more off than others.
It's OK, next time I'll make you listen. I wish that it were in the power of all children to say that to their parents and to know that indeed they would be heard as we were in those wonderful days on Waltons Mountain.Narrator The Waltons (From the Runawa
