Out of curiosity, when did you get your driver's licence. Me, I'm 17 years old and my Mom doesn't want to sign me up for driver's ed, but she recently signed my sister up who recently turned 16. My mom said that after she gets her driver's licence, she'll sign me up for driver's ed, so unfortunatly I won't be getting my driver's licence anytime soon.

Now that ticks me off!!! She let my sister get behind the wheel on the parking lot but not let me do it. She did really bad even my mom and sister agrees with me. But does she seriously think I would do a whole lot worse. I mean it's like come on, just because I'm autistic that does not give her an excuse not to let me even try to let me get on the wheel until I'm like 23. She doesn't want me to try because she thinks that the minute I'm on the wheel, she believes that I'm gonna get into a car crash and DIE. So I guess this means that I'm never going to get behind the wheel. EVER!!!!! She is a complete worry wort!!!! You may think I'm making this up, like I'm trying to be funny. But NO!!! I'm dead serious around here. DEAD SERIOUS!!!!!

I got it when I was 16, but I'm not autistic. If my kid were autistic, I suppose it would depend on the severity of his condition before I made an assessment. Your mother obviously has concerns for your safety, so I'm siding with her on this one.

True. I'm probably just never ever going to get my driver's licence.

That's a tough one, blulu...can you get around town on a bike?

I own a vehicle, but I'm lucky enough to live in a place where a bicycle is my main mode of transportation.

Also, I know a lot of parents are like that. But just think, when you are out on your own, you'll be able to get a driver's license without your mom's permission. I hope your situation improves.

I tried doing that but you can't delete threads, just the posts.

Well... yeah I can get around town with a bicycle. But I think driving's even harder. The teachers over at school gave me a DMV guide to help me learn, I was telling my Mom all about it, she thinks I'm doing a good job at reading it. But it's no use at all, that doesn't change her mind at all. I don't think nothing will ever change her mind.

Driving is overrated anyways. It's expensive, frustrating, isolating, and detrimental to the environment.

I am going to buy a little bell for my bike!

As a Luigi, you should invest in a Vespa.

Don't listen to Pixies. He's only bitter because he has 4 DUI's and is not allowed to drive. Especially after the incident with the 4 year old.

Im 18 and I dont even have my temps yet! But I dont care, I dont really care about driving. Unless you have some place to go, dont be to bummed out on not being able to drive. Just think that shes being super careful with you because she loves you, and she doesnt show that same caution with your sister so she loves YOU more :p :D But dont worry, of course you'll get your licsence, it doesnt have to be soon.

I'm 19 and don't have mine yet. I don't really need one, since there's a bus I can ride for free to college. Owning a car and driving it would just waste so much of my money.

I didn't get my license until just before I turned 19. I went through driving school when I was 18 and failed the test twice because I'm a nervous test-taker, but a completely competent driver. It wasn't a problem for me until I got to college, but I can understand needing to drive. You're still 17, though, plenty of time. My bf didn't get his until he was 23 for no particular reason. It happens all the time. Kids are way too anxious about getting theirs these days. One of the driving school students cursed out the teacher because he had to wait 4 months before he was legally allowed to take it and the test was 2 days before 4 months. Don't be like that kid!

I know it's hard with a disability. My roommate is 22 and probably won't ever get hers because of her disability, which is similar to Autism. But I also know two people in your situation who do drive and they make more mistakes, but they waited a couple more years and passed with no problems. You should start learning now and take the test in a couple years so you get enough experience behind the wheel. That's what I wish I had done while I wasn't in driver's ed.

I was nearly 19, too, sunriser, but I failed my test three times. Finally some lady took pity on me and passed me.

                              shucks...
I had mine the second I was old enough.
My dad had just bought me a real clunker, so I was pretty excited to get in there and tear that thing a new one.
Ended up selling that turd car for $200 about a year later.

Yeah, true. My Dad said that he'd teach me but my Mom doesn't want him to. He also said that he's saving a car for me after I do get my Driver's Licence. And another thing I need to drive to get home from school instead of taking the bus home which I have to pay $1.80 every day to get home and that takes me an hour and a half to get home from the bus. That's a great reason why I could use skills about driving.

I got one for a few years now... enjoying having it around. I failed the written test once, passed the second time and passed the driving test at first try (I've gotten a lot of experience before trying).

I got my permit at 15 years old. Got my license at 16 years old. Driving is a breeze for me.

Anyways, why did your sister sign up for driving and not you? That's lame.

Because he's autistic. That's the conundrum. It sucks because driving is HUGE in America. If you go over to China or New Zealand, its all about bikes. They design everything so that all you need is a bike to get around town.

Its like we build things in America so that you HAVE to have a car.
