The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is almost ready for prime time. As a product of the Joint Strike Fighter Program, (JSF), to design a single platform for all branches of the military, the F-35 has had its share of development cost overruns and delays.

Whatever your opinions about military spending in the USA, the F-35 Lightning represents a unique moment in history. The biggest design drawback of the F-35 has been the allowances made for its human pilot. The F-35 may be the last advanced fighter with a human onboard, our technology is well ahead of human physiology.

If this is correct then the F-35 Lightning is the last of its kind.

My friend is trying to become a fighter pilot. I told him he better hurry up or the closest he'll be is with a joystick controlling one!

Yes, once fully deployed the F-35 will remain operational for a few years to come but it will soon be replaced by its robot cousins - and the joystick control era will not last long either!
