Depression is something teenagers always go through. Always. They develop feelings for women, and they don't get enough lovin'.

I used to be quite depressed. They had me see shrinks and take different medicines and stuff, but nothing worked.

I know of only one forumula that works for me... and it ironically is the thing that a depressed person wants to do the least:

      1. Lots of sunlight, as much as you can get.
      2. Lots of exercise. Run around the block untill your legs are shaking and your lungs feel like they're going to collapse... then go lift weights or chop wood or something.
      3. Eat properly, this means limiting the amount of processed foods you eat and maximizing the amount of whole foods you eat.

These three in conjunction are a great cure for insomnia and depression. If I ever get recurring signs of either one, even though I don't want to... I know the only things that will help me is those three.

I guarantee that if you just do these things for 2 weeks... and really apply yourself, you will notice an improvement. The thing that sucks about it is that its not easy for a depressed insomniac to get up and start doing this stuff, but if you can find it in yourself to just say "Fuck it", and go outside and run, you'll be on your way to helping yourself out a great deal.

Not all teenagers. I've never been depressed. Bummed out from time to time, but never the whole drawn out thing that is depression.

Well sir, you must've been either:

          A. Highly optimistic in life.
          B. Had/have a happy relationship with a woman.
          C. Never have anything going wrong in life, because your life's perfect just the way it is.

          Neow... which is it?

I do feel depressed sometimes. Actually in some ways I'm always depressed. I mean it's like I don't have a whole lot of friends and the people at my school that I hang out with the most are stupid jerks who doesn't have any respect for what's to obscure for me (such as joking about one of them being gay and showing me photoshopped pictures of him having sex with a guy and other obscure things.) I also don't feel that much. I don't get a lot of hugs at school, I can't even remember the last time I've been hugged. I feel depressed because I don't even have a social life, well not a real one anyway.

I think the "real world" has left me depressed to some extent. So far it just doesn't compare to childhood. In fact, I don't think it ever will. This is not to say I dislike my life or that I'm sad and mopy all the time, it's just that from a relative standpoint, things aren't as good as they used to be.

                    I'm going for C.

And i think Pixies' advice is top notch. get proactive, not retrospective!

i cycled, with some loud, angry music, exercised a fair bit, and just avoided doing the stuff that would make me think to much, like moping in my room

I noticed that your post went unnoticed (EDIT: oops, I just noticed Timown responded to your post, so one person noticed it), but I must say that you are 100% correct. It may not be what my fellow depressed RJers want to hear, but it is the truth, and the only known cure for depression that I know. Just ask a doctor.
Oh, and getting into a relationship does not cure depression! I don't care how cute and loving he or she is.

Its such a shame that we've built this huge technological womb to enclose ourselves in, but now we're arguably more miserable of a species than we've ever been.

When I am working my ass off all day on the farm or taking care of the baseball field, I feel absolutely fantastic. Why? Because I am giving my body what it needs to feel happy. Now, I'm stuck having to stay inside a lot because of school, and I feel a noticable drop in my mood. I don't think I'm unique.

I hope you take my advice, Benjanime.

Same here. I used to be a happy camper until I got in my late teens. I'm still finding a way to cope with depression, hopefully I won't need a psychologist.

I used to be paralyzed by depression. I mean, I literally would not get out of bed all day, just lay there in the dark.

You just have to gradually build up enough resentment with living in your current state that you just can't take it anymore. That's how it worked for me at least. Good luck, Benjanime.

Well sir, you must've been either:

                                      A. Highly optimistic in life.
                                      B. Had/have a happy relationship with a woman.
                                      C. Never have anything going wrong in life, because your life's perfect just the way it is.

                                      Neow... which is it?
                                      Closest one would be A.
I've had plenty go wrong in life, just like everybody else, and considering I'm almost 26 now and not married yet, obviously my luck with women is less than normal.

So yeah, I guess I'd be optimistic. I believe that in the end, everything will work out the way its supposed to work out. I'm a christian, and the big guy up there knows what he's doing.

I also think it has something to do with just plain old willpower. I've had a few times where I could feel that I was about to get depressed, and I just basically decided I wasn't going to let it happen.
