I normally don't come online with real life problems but I felt the need to inform everyone of what is going on with me right now.
It started about 4 years ago when I noticed numbness and pain in my right wrist.. I also would have pain on my elbow and my pinky and ring finger would numb up.. Lately it has been worse and I finally broke down and decided to do something about it.
I went to an orthopedic doctor, got his assessment then went to a hand specialist for a second opinion.

The neurological tests were run and the results are..

carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists, 20% in left and 65% in right.
carpal tunnel syndrome
ulnar nerve damage in both elbows, the right is a alot worse that the left.
ulnar nerve damage
I am using a brace on my right wrist when it hurts too badly.

After seeing the second doctor I have decided and set the date for my surgery on December 20th.

After the surgery I will be out of work for 2 and half weeks and since I will be home and most likely bored out of my skull I will be able to come online and I may type a bit slower with my left hand but I will still be able to function.
The only worry I will have is the large scar that will be on the back of my right elbow..
After about 8 weeks I will be able to return to 100% normalcy in my actions.

Good luck man! I hope your recovery is speedy.

Carpel tunnel is somthing I am sure to get programming all day and I am not looking forward to it.

It is painful and annoying... I hope that you do not get it.

        Forget the surgery.
The worst thing about it is the IV drip.
I hate those things. Its all pumping and being gross.
And it makes you gotta piss every 5 seconds. Right when you get somewhat comfortable in the hospital bed...nope, back to the bathroom.

I don't know how long I will be on the drip since it is supposed to be an outpatient surgery.

Vertex: tell me about it. I'll probably end up getting CTS doing all this touch typing I do every day and with my potential future office job. Not something I'm going to look forward to myself. :\

Again cyber, hope things go well for you. get well, and take it easy.

EDIT: Harry, couldn't you request a bedpan for that kind of thing? and when I was on the IV before, I didn't need to goto the bathroom every five seconds (although I did end up with mass diarraheah the next day and STILL have the little scar from it :\)

I've been on the computer a lot in recent years, and I haven't had carpal tunnel. Maybe it's because I don't type "professionally".

                (sorry, had to do it.)

Good luck with the surgery. Will it be same day, or will you be staying overnight?

I probably have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I notice that if I type a document that is long, or if I\'m copying information from many pages of research, My wrists start to hurt. They don\'t go numb though....

Also, I assume after the surgery, they\'ll probably tell you not too use your wrists for typing extensively.

Anyway, hope you get your wrists restored to their normal state.

I hope it goes well. It sounds like it will be for the best. I know how you feel about medical issues. I try not to complain, but it's so hard.

I had TMJ for a while, it's something that affects your jaw so you can't chew right and it locks up on occasion. They considered surgery, but they gave me a splint and filed down my molars to correct my bite and I haven't had problems with it in about 2 years.

In carpal tunnel release surgery, the goal is to divide the transverse carpal ligament in two. This is a wide ligament that runs across the hand, from the base of the thumb to the base of the fifth finger. It also forms the top of the carpal tunnel, and when the surgeon cuts across it (i.e., in a line with the middle finger) it no longer presses down on the nerves inside, relieving the pressure.

I will end up with about an inch scar on my wrist.

Now the ulnar nerve or more commonly known as Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, the scar will be larger (around 6\" to 7\").

Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve, which passes through the cubital tunnel (a tunnel of muscle, ligament, and bone) on the inside of the elbow, becomes irritated due to injury or pressure. The condition may occur when a person frequently bends the elbows (such as when pulling, reaching, or lifting), constantly leans on the elbow, or sustains a direct injury to the area.

Least your surgery will be better than what I had on Fathers Day this year lol Nothing like having a softball size blood clot form out of spontaneous bleeding in your abdomen.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery afterwards

I had a boss who has carpal tunnel and had the surgery. It was so bad that the surgery could correct it so he was learning to write with his other hand.

I think I\'m starting to get it.

Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers. Some carpal tunnel sufferers say their fingers feel useless and swollen, even though little or no swelling is apparent. The symptoms often first appear in one or both hands during the night, since many people sleep with flexed wrists. A person with carpal tunnel syndrome may wake up feeling the need to "shake out" the hand or wrist. As symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day. Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. In chronic and/or untreated cases, the muscles at the base of the thumb may waste away. Some people are unable to tell between hot and cold by touch.

I know I have it, but, like Giggles am to stubborn to go to the doctor and do anything about it. I've heard the surgery is pointless.
