I was in Special Ed once... It's just bullshit. Some kids they put in there by chance or if you just suck in school, and they put the others who're the trouble makers in.

I was in special ed math throughout the end of middle school and all throughout highschool. I don't care. The work was easier (even though I still didn't understand it). I was glad that I wasn't stuck in an algebra class.

Judging by the majority of the posts here, I'd say a vast majority of people on this forum were/are in special ed.

eh, special ed wasn't much for me, but i wish they wouldn't have made me do decimals and division in my last years of school. i have bad memory problems, and late math was just too complicated for me. also, some kids were between the lines of normal to brain-damaged to completely annoying.....

i had a few black friends, and they seemed like the only people in my high school classes who were normal. one white kid with glasses had diabetes, but he was crazy sometimes. after i graduated i'd heard from an old friend of mine that his girlfriend was once in the same class as him, but then when second semester came around, she was put in a different class and he got so pissed about it that he (somehow) broke a window in the school. i had only one white friend and he was the one who told me that story. he's an alright kid, he barely gets in trouble in school at all, and he gets good grades. only one kid in our class had brain-damage, so everyone kept their cool around him. so i dunno, i guess my last years of high school went alright

LOL there was this black kid who broke a window in my supplemental class. He was fighting with some white kid who wanted to keep the window open and it was fuckin snowing...and the black kid was really cold, and they were going back and forth trying to open and shut the window and the black kid got mad and somehow shattered the window..he was taken to the hospital.

I will come out and say that some of what the OP said is true for me

other than that, I still kicked ass in school, academic wise of course.

however things would've probably been a lot different had I punched people in the face for starting at me, heh I'd've probably been in alternative school or juvie or something :p

I was in a special ed math class my senior year. I was terrible at math but got A's and B's in all my other main stream classes. It was weird for me, because I genuinly had problems with math and the other kids that were in the very small class were mostly delinquints. They were mostly just lazy and argued with the teacher. When they actually did the work they had no problem with it so for most of them I think being in a classroom with tons of kids was to much of a distraction for them and that is why they were in my smaller math class.

I teach special ed and I promise I do my best to make it as barable as possible for being school, to all children in my class! but then, I must confess I teach the district's early childhood program!

I was briefly in the Francis Howell School District when I did a brief stint in Missouri Senior Year.

i'm not in special ed, nor was i ever in special ed, so i wouldn't know, but at my school we have a special ed program and we keep them in the basement because they're RAWR SCARY (i don't really feel that way, i'm making fun of my school).
For some reason the kids who go to my school and are in wheelchairs go there (except for my one friend, who is in a wheelchair but mentally is perfectly proficient in everything), and so does this one kid who's blind. It's not really that big a deal.

I was never in Special Ed itself (I had an Aid at one point, which isolated me from the "cool kids" but I never liked them anyway) but I did vounteer to help the Special Ed kids in my High School.

I think my school's Special Ed was more of a "Throw the kids we don't want to deal with here" place than an actual Special Ed. Sure, there were some kids who obviously needed it (like Down Syndrom or Autistic) but it seemed the majority of the kids weren't mentally challanged, just troubled or not mentally challanged but in a wheelchair. Seriously, I found myself wondering "What are they doing in Special Ed?" more than once.

Special Ed just means an easier level class right? If so, I was in sped biology, English (gr 10-12) and math (gr 10-11). Each class comes in 3 levels: intensive (hard), comprehensive (medium), and selective (easy). I only chose the selective ones because I'm super lazy and didn't want to do any homework. But I would end up getting marks around 80-95%. I could probably do intensive english if i wasn't so lazy

I was fortunate to be a smart kid, but Special Ed. has changed since I went to school. We used to have the best programs in the country. We even had special schools/communities for the kids who were just not right for regular classes, but then the government told us we sucked because we weren't being "inclusive." So now, as an art teacher I had to get training in Special Ed. because I have pretty much everyone in the school and the classes are mixed levels. It works and it doesn't. Lately I've noticed some students getting impatient with the special treatment the autistic students get. But this also means I deal with the behavior problem students a lot. Behavior problems are learning disabilities as well.

I have a feeling things will change again, especially when they realize these kids are taking the tests like everyone else. That goes for students learning English. I hope they go back to pulling students out for specific subjects instead of torturing them.

Luckily for me, my aspergers is only mild, thus I not have to get that much help. But, in this one room they put me in, I was shocked. You had people in there calling the teacher a bitch or a cunt. I will tell you the story of how I was placed in that room.

I was a sophomore in HS when it happened. Someone had gone around writing hit lists in the bathroom. It continued until December 3, 2004. I was called out of class. The principal, then escorted me to his office. When we got i there; the police, as well as the head principal of the school was in there. They said that they had good evidence that it was me. I was placed in handcuffs. I did not say a word. I was quiet the entire time. In my head I was thinking, am I being punked? Then, I'm led out into the hall, and into a cruiser. I'm then brought to the police station in Cottleville.

I was interrogated. They made no intention of calling my mother. They eventually did. I was also told I was suspended for 10 days. 10 days go by. There was an IEP manifestation meeting, determining id I could go back. I was told I could. But I was not allowed to, not by the principal.

So, long story short, they placed me in a room full of creepy, BD kids.
