I didn't like it that much either. I had Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on VHS and I used to watch it at least once a week, as a kid. I was happy when they made the remake but disappointed when I actually saw it.

IT was NOT a "remake" of the earlier film it was a re-adaptation of the novel and quite a nice adaptation i'd say.

It's like saying I Am Legend was a "remake" of Omega Man and saying Omega Man was a "remake" of Last man on Earth, NOPE, all three are adaptations of the same source material being Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend but their plots and stuff are different.

I consider remakes and re-adaptations to be 2 very different things! remakes are usually based ONLY on ORIGINAL FILMS/SCREENPLAYS not based on source material like say Ocean's 11, Scarface, The Blob, Nutty Professor, King Kong, Hills have Eyes etc. are all based on original films/original screenplays and all are TRUE remakes in every sense. Re-adaptation means another adaptation of source material (book, comic or novella) and not the previous films that adapted the source material like say John Carpenter's The Thing (not a remake of the earlier film but in name only as it has little in common other than alien and snow as it's actually a very faithful re-adaptation of the short story that was very loosely adapted in the earlier film), Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, I Am Legend, Carrie, Dracula and Frankenstein films, Batman BeginsGirl with Dragon Tattoo, War of the Worlds etc. are all based on books, novellas and comics as they are all adaptations.

    The more you know.

It's okay if Wilder did not like Johnny Depp's performance. I find the two movies equally enjoyable but i prefer the 70's version since it has a more theatrical musical quality

I didn't think it was a good remake either. Remakes should improve on the earlier movie. IMO the remake did not do that in any way except maybe picture quality.

That new Total Recall was alright, not better than the first, but it was watchable.

For me, that just makes me think, "what's the point?" Surely the studio didn't set out to make a less-good movie. But when I hear that, I don't have any interest in seeing the remake. When the remake is better, I might still like the original movie because it's the original. But when the original is better, the remake has no such value.

Of course, it's all opinion. I would rather watch the original Little Shop of Horrors movie and other people like the 80s version more. Trying to think of remakes that I do like...A Perfect Murder, Scarface. Maybe King Kong, but I haven't actually gotten around to watching it yet!

I realized after watching it again that I like a lot of things about this movie except for Johnny Depp and the Chocolate Factory scenes. Too much Tim Burton combined with awful CGI.

A little princess was equally enjoyable as the Shirley Temple one but the 90s version had more emotional depth
