a baseball hat a video game? when all else fails money in a card works, or just find out what he likes and go from there.
Find out his musical likes and pick up either a few CDs or an ITunes/Napster/whatever music service you use/he uses gift card.
DVDs and books relating to the kids' likes might be good, too.

that said, I would get him one of those prepaid debit cards. load it up with, say, $100 or so. don't forget to tell him how to reload it and the max limit on it. or perhaps, get one of those Mastercard/Visa gift cards. they're not like your typical gift card. These can be used ANYWHERE, even online. :D

That way you don't have to worry about what EXACTLY to get him. He can pick out whatever he wants and you'll know he's happy with it and won't feel like you wasted your money if he doesn't like it or you're not sure if he'll like it or not. Everyone will be happy that way :)
