What's up with some of these classical music elitists out there? A guy I was talking to today said I was "stupid" because I like rock music. He kept saying everybody who likes it is stupid because the music is "predictable" and "so boring". He kept saying "There's nothing worth hearing because it's just changes in pitches and there's no real music". What gives? Can't people just have personal preferences? Why do we need some kind of richter scale of "what is worth liking and isn't"? Seriously, seems to me like some people only know what they've been told.

Anyway, I was thinking of the reasons I like rock music better than classical. Of course, he didn't accept them and just kept saying I was stupid. Here are some of my reasons.

1. Lyrics - So some people may say the music is simple. Big deal! A lot of people (like me) love rock music because we actually find emotions in the lyrics that we can't find anywhere else. Rock music tends to capture the emotion of the lyrics because the singers use more natural voices. When I've had a bad day, I sure love to blast my stereo to a good rock song I can relate to.

2. Memories - Well, if you ask me, rock music seems to cover a lot of lifestyles of different types. Along with that, though, the sound reminds people of things they like. For example, 80s rock always reminds me of going out on the town on a Saturday night. Punk rock reminds me of skateboarding and hanging out with friends. Etc. Etc. Etc.

3. Simplicity - Ahhh... the exact reason music elitists hate it. While I do like some classical music (don't get me wrong) , it requires one to sit down and pay close attention to the notes and structure to be appreciated. Rock is easier to just blast and have a great time with, wether you're just driving around, dancing, or hanging out at a party.

Anyway, this post is not meant to tick off people who like classical music. I like some of it too. I just had to blow off some steam after being called "stupid" because of a personal preference I have.

To be honest, I feel like many rockers are elitists themselves. Feeling that there's nothing worthwhile outside of rock music is pretty annoying. I've yet to see a rocker who has a good word to say about dance music or rap music. They can get pretty nasty with their criticisms of those genres, and if that isn't elitist, I don't know what is.

There is some rock music I like, but I'm open to all genres, and that's a thing I feel that many rockers lack.

Of course, an open mind is a good thing. Like I said, I like classical music too. But when people act like it's the only thing worth listening to (and calling people stupid), they need to open their minds.

My original post was just my take on the general stereotype of "the rocker", most exemplified in movies and TV shows. From "Tenacious D" to the obviously-titled "The Rocker", there's just this stereotype that makes all rockers look like elitists. I know that isn't true, but still, it is something I've noticed a lot.

Kid Rock is one of the worst offenders. Barely a "rocker" himself, if at all, he had the nerve to crack on boy bands after he released "Baw Witta Baw." Don't get me wrong...boy bands were/are annoying...but Kid Rock...take the check that you are stealing and button your lip. Maybe no one will notice that your stuff back then wasn't much better, if better at all.

For every classical music elitist, there is 100 elitist rockers. I'm sick of people like you mentioning Queen and Led Zepplin every second you can.

Uh... I never mentioned Queen and Led Zepplin. Heck, I don't even care for them that much.

I like rock music because of the sound and feel of it. It's the best of any kind of music in my opinion.

Exactly what I'm saying. People should listen to whatever they enjoy, just like you do. I don't get why some people call other people "stupid" because they like something different.

Pizza Guy, next time you talk to that classical elitist just tell him that there is a lot of rock music that was inspired and informed by classical music, especially some pogressive rock and metal but also even some of the really basic stuff was occasionally inspired by it. Also although there is some really excellent classical music some of it isn't particuarly special, just musical mathmatic and semetrical formulas and patterns that trained musicians can play like a musical paint by numbers set.

Personally, rock is my favorite music because of the sheer catharsis I get from it. I like at least a few things from every music genre but rock defenitley comes first with me. I agree with Pizza Guy, just like what you like. If we all liked the same stuff, it'd be a pretty boring world.

Rock just gives me a rush, a certain feeling of power and emotion that certain genres just don't give to me. I'm willing to see how and why other people like said genres, even if I disagree or make jokes about it. Just tell that dude that if he is going to call the listeners of other genres "stupid", he could at least appreciate why we love it.

                          Oh yeah?

I like rock music because its just what I listen to and to me is better than any rapper or R n B star that seems to get more airplay than anything else these days.
