What's up with some of these classical music elitists out there? A guy I was talking to today said I was "stupid" because I like rock music. He kept saying everybody who likes it is stupid because the music is "predictable" and "so boring". He kept saying "There's nothing worth hearing because it's just changes in pitches and there's no real music". What gives? Can't people just have personal preferences? Why do we need some kind of richter scale of "what is worth liking and isn't"? Seriously, seems to me like some people only know what they've been told.
Anyway, I was thinking of the reasons I like rock music better than classical. Of course, he didn't accept them and just kept saying I was stupid. Here are some of my reasons.
1. Lyrics - So some people may say the music is simple. Big deal! A lot of people (like me) love rock music because we actually find emotions in the lyrics that we can't find anywhere else. Rock music tends to capture the emotion of the lyrics because the singers use more natural voices. When I've had a bad day, I sure love to blast my stereo to a good rock song I can relate to.
2. Memories - Well, if you ask me, rock music seems to cover a lot of lifestyles of different types. Along with that, though, the sound reminds people of things they like. For example, 80s rock always reminds me of going out on the town on a Saturday night. Punk rock reminds me of skateboarding and hanging out with friends. Etc. Etc. Etc.
3. Simplicity - Ahhh... the exact reason music elitists hate it. While I do like some classical music (don't get me wrong) , it requires one to sit down and pay close attention to the notes and structure to be appreciated. Rock is easier to just blast and have a great time with, wether you're just driving around, dancing, or hanging out at a party.
Anyway, this post is not meant to tick off people who like classical music. I like some of it too. I just had to blow off some steam after being called "stupid" because of a personal preference I have.
