Twister
Release: December 15, 1996

Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, and Carey Elwes may be billed as the stars of Twister, but the film's real attractions are the tornadoes themselves. Best experienced in a theater, the nail-biting blow-the-audience-out-of-their-seats computer generated graphics, cutting edge sound, and other special effects are designed to take viewers straight into the roaring funnel of a gigantic tornado. In order to focus on special effects and action, the story is simple and the characters are drawn in broad strokes with little depth. Jo (Hunt) became a storm chaser after a large tornado sucked her hapless father into oblivion when she was a little girl. Bill (Paxton) was a storm chaser too, but left to become a successful weatherman. His change of profession ruined his marriage to Jo. Before separating, they invented DOROTHY, a gizmo designed to release thousands of tiny sensors when a tornado passes over it. They hope the information transmitted by the sensors will provide insight into the tornadoes' nature. Backed by a large corporation, the villainous Dr. Jonas Miller (Elwes) has created a similar machine. Neither has been field tested and both groups of storm chasers are anxious to find tornadoes. At the peak of the worst tornado season in decades, Bill shows up at Jo's truck with his prissy fiancee, Melissa (Jami Gertz), so she can sign divorce papers. Suddenly a tornado is spotted. With little hesitation, Bill rejoins the mad rush to reach it in time to activate DOROTHY. Jonas and his team are right behind them. Throughout the day the tornadoes become worse and the rivalrous race becomes more intense. As they continue facing incredible dangers together Bill and Jo find renewed love while poor Melissa finds only an intense desire to get away from these storm-obsessed lunatics.

Quotes
Jason 'Preacher' Rowe: "The Finger of God."
Dusty: "The Suck Zone. It's the point basically when the twister... sucks you up. That's not the technical term for it, obviously."
Rabbit: "Rabbit is good, Rabbit is wise."
Beltzer: "That's no moon, that's a space station!"
Bill: "She's a therapist."
Jo: "Oh. Yours?"
Bill: "Christ, you couldn't resist, could you?"
Jo: "Can I drive?"
Bill: "No!"
Jo: "Then would you?"
Dusty: "Red meat. We crave sustenance"
Bill: "Jo. Things go wrong. You can't explain it, you can't predict it. Killing yourself won't bring your dad back. I'm sorry that he died, but that was a long time ago. You gotta move on. Stop living in the past, and look what you got right in front of you."
Jo: "What are you saying Bill?"
Bill: "Me Jo...Me"
Bill: "Dorothy. You took her, you damn thief."
Jo: "What's the urgent urgency? You act like you're getting married."
Bill: "I am."
Bill: "Why can't we spend a normal day together?"
Jo: "Cow."
Jo: "Where's my truck?"
Melissa: "When you used to tell me that you chase tornadoes, deep down I thought it was just a metaphor."
Melissa: "She didn't marry your penis. Okay, she didn't only marry your penis."
Dusty: "Ha Ha! It's the wonder of nature, baby!"
Dusty: "The extreme!"
Rabbit: "God, Meg, you've got a lot of beef. Where did you get all this beef?"
Meg Greene: "Did you see my cows out front?"
Rabbit: "No."
Meg Greene: "Oh!"
Beltzer: "Hey, you guys want to wrap this up pretty soon?"
Bill: "What?"
Beltzer: "Oh, nothing. I was just wondering if you wanted to chase this tornado, or if you just wanted to catch the next one."
Dusty: "Did you just miss that truck? That's awesome!"
