Star Gazers
Debut: November 06, 1976

PBS documentary series showcasing astronomy. The show first began in 1976 hasted by Jack Foley Horkheimer, an astronomer at the Miami Museum of Science. In the early 1970's he appeared on Miami's WPBT TV with a local show called Horkheimer's Heavens. In 1976 Star Gazers would premiere nationally airing at five minutes before the station's sign off. The show was originally studious and featured a seriously toned Horkheimer but in 1985 he switched to a more enthusiastic character so the show could appeal to large audiences. The show was called "Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler" from 1997 to 2011, even with Horkheimer's death in 2010. In 2011 the Star Gazers name returned along with a series of guest hosts. In each weekly episode, the show would educate viewers about astronomical events for the coming week and about astronomy and astronomical history in general. Horkheimer used various catchphrases to help viewers remember how to find astronomical bodies. He would also talk about astronomical events in the news including the appearance of comets and eclipses. The series would show on PBS stations immediately before sign off but now shows in the late evening as a break between programs, with most PBS stations now airing 24 hours.
