Being young is tough on many levels, but for Vivian Abromowitz (Natasha Lyonne), things are especially strenuous. It's 1976 and she and her family have moved to Beverly Hills, but not the glamorous Beverly Hills that everyone is familiar with. The reason for the constant moving is because her parents want her and her siblings to go to the best schools that they can afford, which isn't much. A rather poor family, they're kept going by Vivian's Uncle Mickey. As if things weren't complicated enough, Vivian is coping with the developments of womanhood and Mickey's wild child daughter Rita (Marisa Tomei) is out of the looney bin, with Vivian's father Murray Samuel (Alan Arkin) using the offer of shelter for her as leverage for better housing. Just an everyday family...
