KCRA-TV in Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto presently broadcasts 42 and a half hours of locally produced newscasts each week. KCRA-TV has been using its news slogan: "Where The News Comes First" since December 1958. In 1959, Stan Atkinson first joined Channel 3 as anchor. From 1960 to the 1990s, KCRA-TV referred to its newscasts as "Channel 3 Reports" instead of "Channel 3 News". In 1963, Atkinson left the station, and it would be 13 years before he returned. By the mid 1970s, KCRA-TV established its news bureaus throughout the state of California. In 1976, Stan Atkinson returned to Channel 3 as anchor. In the late 1970s, Dave Walker and his future wife, Lois Hart both joined Channel 3 as co-anchors before they left the station in 1980 to both anchored CNN's first news broadcast in June of that year. In 1979, KCRA-TV became the first television station in the Sacramento market to launch its news helicopter called: "Live Copter 3". In December 1979, Kaity Tong joined the team as co-anchor of the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. weeknight newscasts until she left in 1981. In 1990, Dave Walker and Lois Hart both returned to KCRA-TV, this time as main lead anchors. In late December 2005, KCRA-TV began using a new "Triple Doppler" radar system for weather reports. On February 12, 2007, KCRA-TV became the first television station in the Sacramento market to broadcast its local newscasts in high-definition. On November 26, 2008, Dave Walker and Lois Hart officially retired after anchored their final newscast at KCRA-TV. In July 2011, KCRA-TV rebranded its newscasts under the name: "KCRA 3 News". On January 25, 2016, KCRA-TV launched a new 4 p.m. weekday newscast, anchored by Lisa Gonzales and Brian Heap. On April 23, 2018, KCRA-TV began to expanded the weekday morning newscasts with an extra half-hour starting at 4 a.m. In March 2020, in amidst of the COVID-19 pandemic, KCRA-TV launched its newest 7 p.m. weeknight newscast.
