Following in the grandness of the 1937 Janet Gaynor/Fredric March original and the 1954 Judy Garland/James Mason remake comes Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the 3rd version of one of the screen's tragic love stories. The longtime career of rock star John Norman Howard has started to decline through his cynical ways and his constant dependency on drugs and alcohol. One night after one of his concerts, he meets the beautiful, innocent and very talented songstress Esther Hoffman and John sees something special in her. They fall in love and with his help and guidance, John puts his faltering superstar status on hold and lays out the path to Esther's rise to stardom. Following her big break, the two marry and continue reaching for success. But while she climbs higher and higher on the charts, John's popularity sinks further downward leading him to believe his star has burned out entirely. Winner of 5 Golden Globes including one for Streisand's song (co-written by Paul Williams) "Evergreen" which went on to win the Academy Award. Directed by Frank Pierson.
