ABC World News Tonight
Debut: August 11, 1948

ABC's Nightly news program. Originally began on August 11, 1948 as News and Views. In 1951, it was renamed After the Deadlines. In 1952, it renamed as All-Star News until January 2, 1953. But finally October 12, 1953, ABC News finally got a weekday evening newscast again, this time titled John Daly and the News. In 1958, it renamed its newscast titled ABC News with Don Goddard, and one year later, it renamed again titled John Daly and the News. In 1960, the evening newscast renamed as ABC Evening Report. From 1965 to 1967, it renamed the title Peter Jennings with the News. On January 1, 1968, renamed ABC News still that time as a weekday evening newscast and extended to a half hour on January 9, 1968. On December 7, 1970, ABC News changed the weekday evening newscast titled ABC Evening News with Howard K. Smith and Harry Reasoner (arrived from CBS News) as co-anchors. In 1975, Reasoner was named the sole anchor. On October 4, 1976, Reasoner co-anchored the newscast with Barbara Walters (who came over from NBC News), under Reasoner returned to CBS News in Summer 1978. On July 10, 1978, the newscast was finally changed to World News Tonight with Peter Jennings (in London), Max Robinson (in Chicago), and Frank Reynolds (in Washington). In April 1983, when Reynolds became ill (who would eventually die), both Jennings and Robinson continued to co-anchor the program. Then finally on August 9, 1983, Peter Jennings became the sole anchor of the program, becoming one of America's most well-known anchors until he died of lung cancer on August 7, 2005. From early to mid 2006, Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff were co-anchors of the program. In late Spring 2006, Charles Gibson was named the sole anchor, but the program was renamed the World News with Charles Gibson on July 19, 2006. In 2009, Diane Sawyer became the sole anchor. And in late Summer 2014, David Muir became sole anchor rename it ABC World News Tonight again.
