Thread: Driver In Front Of You Doesn't Go When Light Turns Green...

You are behind a car stopped at a red light...the light turns green and the car in front of you doesn't move and you blow the horn. In most cases the car in front will then move on with no incident...but there have been occasions where I would blow the horn and the driver in front of me would get irritated and give me the finger. I've even heard of drivers getting mad enough to the point where they will actually get out of their car and approach the driver behind them who blew the horn and cussing out or even physically assaulting that driver. Fortunately, that has never happened to me.
Anyway, my question is...Why do some drivers get angry over someone behind them blowing their horn, because they don't go right when the light turns green, when THEY are the ones in the wrong???

More than likely they are distracted by their smartphone. I get pissed when someone honks 2 sec later, but any longer you have every right to. This is one reason why traffic lights should be kept to a minimal on a street and the ones that are must be synchronized with one another.. It's better to have raised medians and require people to turn right and then u-turn.

Using a cellphone while driving is illegal anyway, so if that's their problem, then they're doubly wrong.

What I see a lot is that after you honk, they'll purposely wait through another light, or go but then go super slow. One time I had a guy follow me for a while, yelling something incoherent. Fortunately he broke off after a couple blocks, and never got out for some physical attack.

Another retarded behaviour is right turns. There are the people that wait till the light turns green before turning, and there are the ones who are too stupid to realize that if someone in the other lane is currently turning left, it's definitely safe to turn right, since the left turn guy would get hit by any traffic first.

How bout those who still insist on going straight from a turn lane, or you go over a lane for the upcoming construction but the d-bag insists on riding it until the lane ends?

Yeah, I hate those jackasses that stay in a lane, despite countless "this lane ends, merge left/right", and then think they can just whip in to the proper lane at the last instant, cutting everyone else off.

Being on the receiving end of those horn blasts, I can tell you it's the most irritating thing in the world because 9 times out of 10, it has only been a few seconds and I am trying to get my manual car into gear. So then I just do my best to make those hotheads even more impatient.

You have no idea what I've been honked at for- stopping at a stop sign, not making a right on red WHEN THERE IS ONCOMING TRAFFIC THAT THE CAR BEHIND ME CANNOT SEE... It is not mandatory to make a right on red! In fact, in a lot of places, it's illegal! The worst was I had stopped in the middle of the road in my neighborhood to allow a schoolkid to continue crossing and some absolute asshole honked at me and tried to drive around me and almost hit the kid. I let him have it before I sped off.

If you guys just chilled for two seconds, life usually fixes itself. My ex used to rev his engine when a driver wasn't paying attention, which is a lot more polite.

Personally, I do wait a little bit before honking. That doesn't change the fact that people often pay no friggin attention to the light. You can see them looking down at their laps, or the passenger, etc.

As far as right turns go: Except where explicitly posted otherwise, they're legal. While it's not legally required to go right on red, not doing so when there's no legitimate reason is foolish & inconsiderate.
As far as traffic the other guy behind you can't see, it's rare that that is a legitimate excuse (such as if there's a sharp curve or a high hedge, etc). 99% of the time, the guy behind you can easily see anything that would affect you turning right (assuming they're paying any attention themselves). The kid crossing for example, if the guy behind you had been paying attention, he would have seen the kid step off the curb, before he might have been hidden by your car.

If you want an example of real stupidity involving traffic lights: One time I was behind these 2 cars that pulled up next to each other at a red light. That sat through a full green light (they were the first car in each of their respective lanes), swapping a joint, then the one car took off when the light turned red again.

Really? Wow. That is epically dumb. Well, I hate it too when people don't go on green, but I give them a few seconds. There is so much stupid crap I see going on when I drive, I just SMH and try to be a "good" driver, and try not to put myself in danger.

I guarantee ever driver here as at least once waited for a red light to get something done in their their car like digging a lighter out of a pocket, taking something out of the glove box, reaching for something in the back seat..etc. Everybody does it at some point. As someone who believes in walking if my destination is less than an hour away. It pisses me off when drivers gets mad at me for taking 30 seconds out of their day because I need to cross the road. You're in a car, if you're in that much of a hurry you should have left earlier.

If I was behind those cars, I would first lock my doors, put the windows up and have my cell phone ready (to call 911), then lean on the horn.

One thing that really pisses me off is when people don't turn right on red when the lane continues when you turn. In other words you can safely turn right regardless of how much traffic is coming, but they'll wait until there are no cars coming like the lane will merge. The whole reason reason they designed it like that is so traffic doesn't back up in the right lane.

They stop on green and go on red. They are eco-friendly.

The joint swapping thing was back around the early/mid 90s, cellphones didn't really exist outside of a millionaire's car. Besides, once I saw them start to swap the joint, it became a "what will they do next" fascination kind of thing.

Having just had a turn right on red honking, gesticulating incident, I turned to the internet to diffuse. But I found this forum. Comments confirm that right on red should be prohibited...that most drivers should not be on the road...and that you are, in fact, responsible for turning a love of driving into a nightmare.

I was just at a red light at the local Walmart, waiting to turn right out of the property. There is a hill to the left and, being that most of the drivers coming over it being like you, they speed up to get through the light, even though it is a light that changes frequently and sensibly. Guy behind me starts honking and gesticulating that I should make the turn. This is with vehicles coming over the hill that he cannot see. If there were such a thing as justifiable assault, I would have liked to have gotten out of my truck, gone back, and beaten the living crap out of him. Better - I would have had the authority to suspend his driver's license. Instead, here I am, where there is proof that there are more of him than there are sentient drivers. If within my power, I would prohibit all automatic transmission vehicles unless a driver is disabled in some manner, and requires one.

Driving is not a "right." While comments here don't address the subject of this thread, and I agree that drivers should not inordinately delay movment when a light turns green, I don't know - and you don't know what might be going on. A car could be stalling. The driver might hear a siren that you do not hear. We're talking seconds of delay. You also aren't supposed to put foot to pedal immediately when a light turns green. Two seconds of checking for traffic and pedestrians is all I'm talking about, and that constitutes safe driving.

Most people commenting here probably pass on the right, into breakdown lanes, no matter what, right? Can't wait behind a car that has a clear shot at a turn in 2 seconds. I've seen drivers drive into gullies so they would not have to wait seconds for the driver in front to turn. What is wrong with you.
